Yeah, same here. I wonder what the workaround could be.... I've said this before, but the Fairmont just looks pretty unfinished at night.

They missed the latest 02/15 opening, but this is from a 02/14 Statesman article about SXSW:

Quote:
Also new for 2018: Assuming the new Fairmont Austin hotel opens on time, it will provide 1,048 new hotel rooms and lots of conference space for SXSW, making it one of the top venues for the event. Forrest said content that has typically been found at the Hyatt Austin Downtown will move over to the Fairmont.

In a written statement, SXSW said: “We’ve had daily updates and site visits with the Fairmont executive team and we’re confident they’re on track and will be ready for SXSW. While we don't expect the opening to be delayed, we do have contingency plans in place."

All the ITKs I know around town seem to be a lot more “hopeful” about this thing opening in time for SXSW rather than expecting it. These guys must have a metric crap ton of money given all the events they’ve not held over the last few months.

This project is definitely worthy of its own special project status.

Well, this is cool. Whenever I get bored, I like to poke around and look at permits. While I was looking for another project on Red River, the one for the Fairmont popped up. I decided to download all the files and take a look again just for the heck of it, and it turns out they posted the elevations for the current design.

The elevations show the spire at 595 feet. There had been some discrepancy in the media with it being listed as 590 feet. Recently, I messaged GenslerATX about getting a copy of the elevations. They suggested I go to the developer. I got an email back from Doug Manchester himself saying to trust the 595 foot height.

Anyway, they posted the elevations, which is the first time I've seen the plans for the current design.

The new elevation files are 032(1) and 033(1).

Drove by today and there's lots of activity in the lobby and meeting space. Guys in suits detailing the lobby couches, not guys in hard hats and reflective vests putting up drywall.

Whatever's happened over there, I think they've finally turned a major corner. Their booking page doesn't show rooms available before or during SXSW, but does show them selling on the Monday after. I would even bet that they have some limited guestroom participation with SXSW -- though the rooms committed are probably reserved for South By staff or VIPs, rather than for public consumption.

For us hotel folks, it's finally becoming obvious that when they finally get themselves in gear, it'll be yet another game changer for the city. We've been trying to picture the impact another 1000+ full guestrooms will have on Rainey St. (which, honestly, is where the Fairmont will empty out into first) and it's going to be incalculable.

Still needs plenty of work. I think the foundation of it is done, but they havent put up any glass, or whatever else they were planning on doing. It's probably the last thing to be done since they don't need it to open the hotel.

I don't think there's going to be glass. AFAIK, it's a concrete frame with screening for side walls. They've already removed some of the street barricades so it's probably farther along than we know.

I'll bet, however, that whatever they're doing to Waller Creek between Red River and ACC will take a lot longer to finish up.

They just applied for their city hotel operating license today. I imagine the management stress level at the hotel is pretty high with all the problems and SXSW so close.

KXAN had a story about the hotel tonight. The official grand opening is Monday. Just in time for SXSW.

Thanks Geckos Rule, as well as a big thank you to Kxan for a brief update. Love the curvature as well as the open environment. Btw you can barely tell if the screen was there.

How many skywalks are there in the urban core? I can think of 6: Fairmont/CC, Hilton/CC, the Med School, the one at Brackenridge (which isn't long for this world), Dean Keaton on campus, and on W. 5th entering downtown from MoPac. The only other proposals for skybridges that I can think of were the Whole Foods to Schlosser development bridge which didn't come to fruition, and those associated with a convention center expansion and to various neighboring other current or potential hotel parcels.

San Antonio has one that I know of on McCullough just north of downtown and is getting another across Cesar Chavez connecting the HEB parking garage currently under construction with its headquarters. Of course, in San Antonio everything the River is taken maximum advantage of for carrying pedestrian traffic, so that connects all the major convention hotels to our convention center.
