District: Center City
Floors: 40 floors
Height: 450+ ft

The latest idea for this corner is MARKET8, a casino owned in a partnership between by the Goldenberg Group, the guy who owns of Campus Apartments, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, and a few others. The main pitch here seems to be that this casino will help to reinvigorate one of Center City’s most depressing yet most visible patches, inspiring additional investment in the area thanks to added foot traffic. With a first floor that would exclusively feature restaurants and retail, we can certainly see how the casino would attract more people to the area. Whether that would spread past the casino’s footprint, however, is anybody’s guess.

Inside, the gaming will be located on the second and third floors, along with bars, additional restaurants, and lounges. The fourth floor will feature a concert hall, a couple of event spaces, and a poker room. The fifth floor will be a lobby area for a 168-room hotel that will rise above the glass box of the first several floors. Let’s just say the design is a small step up from the last hotel that was built in the area.

That design looks sick! A bit Las Vegas'y in a way. But interesting proposal.

I like the design. The location at 8th and Market has been desolate for years. I like the idea of having a hotel with the casino. I like the option of drink, entertainment, gambling with the ability to stay over night.

There was the idea of putting a casino close to this location before (Gallery). It received major criticism from the Chinatown groups. I would expect the same.

Market East needs something major to happen, I am torn whether this would be good or bad or both.

Whatever one thinks of the proposal, I'd have to say that architecturally this is the sexiest yet.

THAT'S for sure. I think it looks more like a Steve Wynn proposal than, well, the Steve Wynn proposal.

The chances of something like this happening just gained a few more percentage points with Steve Wynn pulling his bid to win the second casino license in Philly.

I don't think it should be on market. The water front might be a better place. Still not sure why people don't just go to atlantic city.

This would work fine as long as they keep it upscale and it's not over the top like Blatstein's concept. I love the idea of Market8 for one stop shop for entertainment. Go get dinner, do a little gambling, and hit the night club or see a show all in one place. The next Philly casino needs to raise the bar and level of excitement. Aside from the habitual gamblers, there is a lot of people in the Greater Philadelphia Area that have a lot of entertainment money to throw around and to be able to do this in a "big city" presence is alluring, per se. Something that these other area casinos can't offer because of their location or lack of statement in their architectural design.

This is why I would like to see the Market8 built. Not because I have a lot of entertainment money but I see it having the most overall impact and I would probably go there more for the restaurants and shops than gambling.

I am in agreement as well. The habitual gamblers will go where ever there is a casino, they care more about convenience.

If Market 8 is built as promised it will offer the big night out type of place that will attract couples looking for an all in one night stop including hotel.

Another big thing this will attract is the bach parties, that love going to AC, because of the nightclub/hotel concept.

You can like gambling and not be an addict.

The building has an excellent rendering and 8th and Market;s lot is so frustrating to look at.

Well being right off the regional rail stop this casino would be the goto place for the entire metro. That would certainly bring a lot into the city. Plus Casinos and Convention Centers seem to be a good combo. I think it is bad taste to put it in philly, in the center, right near independence mall though. But what also makes philly great is doing crazy stuff like this.

If it really is a particularly awesome casino then ya that'd be good, but I don't trust that they'd follow through with that. Also I'm worried that what might look cool now, after 20-30-40 years will look corny.

I am having a hard time believing Keating is nothing but a leach. He jumps from project to project. He was quoted as saying Market 8 was a terrible idea and wouldn't work to 6 months later joining their team when Wynn jumped.

I like the idea of Market 8 if it can deliver exactly what it says. Keating and Sugar House didn't.

I am for anything that cleans up and fixes that part of town. With that said, I hope that any license or gambling permit given to this place is contingent on building to plan. No multiple phases, etc. The last thing Market St. needs is a Sugar House type casino.
