It makes sense if you look at the east side of the tower - the hotel horizontal bars are a continuation of the bars that run up the entire middle of the tower on the east side. The zig-zags on the sides of the office portion are a separate element.

Although more casual observers on the north, south, and west sides will probably never consider that and will likely see it as a design discrepancy...

Then a better solution would have been to use the beveling on the east side too.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but maybe they wanted a subtle but distinct difference between hotel & office segments (other than the obvious width change)?

Globe-trotting chef/restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten and hometown hero Greg Vernick — his onetime protégé and the James Beard Award-winning owner of Vernick Food & Drink — will open restaurants at the Comcast Technology Center, now rising above Center City, a representative of Comcast confirmed to The Inquirer.

The restaurants — whose names and precise concepts have not been disclosed — are to open in summer 2018, as Comcast and the Four Seasons Hotel occupy the 60-story building at 18th and Arch Streets.

Big difference is the number of tiers/setbacks that make the Chicago tower more graceful. Sorry, but the CITC is like this building's big oaf cousin. I remember when the design was first unveiled someone here had photoshopped another setback below the current one, giving the tower a more graceful top. Like I said in the past, I am eagerly awaiting to see how the spire will balance things out.
