Civic identity and values? Give me a break. "Broad shoulders" was a term coined in 1916 (which btw, had absolutely nothing to do with the architecture). That city being described hasnt existed for almost 100 years.

Are you also still sour over the stockyards closing? Or the factories turning into yuppie lofts in River North?

Look around...we're living in the 21st century. Basing the shape of our city off of a romanticized poem of life at the turn of the last century is a fairly backwards way of going through life.

Couldn't agree more Via. I respect the past, but look forward to this cities future. In no way are they disrespecting the city or the Sears by modernizing it and putting a hotel on its over sized sidewalk, I mean "plaza".

I am not 100% sure, but as far as I know it is already ongoing.. as I have spoken before to the people overseeing it. Dupont made the replacement glass, and they have been installing it with the window robot after hours as far as I know. I think they were just being creative with the renderings.. because why the hell would they replace all the glass with new energy efficient glass, to then just replace it all again?

I for one won't miss the "plaza" at Sears, which is pretty much an unusable wasteland for half the year due to threat of ice falling on people from 1,450 feet.

Seriously the Sears is a fuking monster. Look at the proposed 50 story hotel quivering in its mere presence.

They don't look like spruces in the rendering, though ...

I hope the black color of the facade remains.

So the entire top floors all have new windows? I think your referring to the glass observation decks. I meant new windows, as someone mentioned that new windows have been installed and continue being installed, under this Willis guy. By the way, excellent shot.

^^^ Willis has nothing to do with the new windows. Willis is a company who is taking out a lease in the tower. A real estate fund from New York owns the building and will be replacing the windows to save energy and increase the desirability of the building. They are the ones replacing the windows.

shakman and others, for the record the above article said the building will not be changing color.

A bunch from today...6/28

Too bad the wind closed the observatory today

Before its gone..

Taken against the building, zoomed in on the "boxes". Heat radiating from the building is creating distortion in the atmosphere.

Another one from last week's announcement:

Even today it blows my mind that a 50-story building doesn't even come up to Sears's waistline.

Thanks. I said this in another thread, but I hope to post on a more regular basis. I got a new camera about 2 months ago, and am having a great time snapping pictures.

At least they didn't decide to go too green and put holes in the building with swimming pools, lakes, and trees in the holes!!
