well you know it just took a lot of talent to design that building...ugh. oh well, sorry for being negative, just tired of seeing these lame looking proposals.

I agree the Four Seasons is a major disappointment. It looked so sexy and thinly-detailed in the renderings, but in reality it appears to be a giant, ill-proportioned hulk. I actually like the charcoal grey cladding they've chosen, but the fenestration on the lower floors makes the building appear too static, lacking the exciting visual energy the rendering suggested. I'll withhold final judgment until it's complete, but as of right now I'm already bored with it.

Someone at SSC mentioned that some of the glass panes on the south side of 1521 2nd were misplaced.

The misplaced ones are the ones where the white horizontal stripe is one floor higher than the rest of the stripe.

Some guys messed up a window on Olive8 too. Did they ever fix that one? Seems that having monitors watching from the outside would eliminate the mistakes.

Thumbs down

I have to agree with harsh criticisms on the Four Seasons Hotel. I was going to reserve judgment until it's complete, but I've seen enough. To me it looks like low-income government housing for the elderly. Just breathtakingly appalling!

I find it difficult to wrap my mind around what the architects and designers were thinking on this one. Jesus, it's foul.

I can't imagine an uglier facade for the First Avenue and Union St. sides. Unbelievable! Somebody should be shot for this one. No question about it.

Someone said Four Seasons was going for understated exclusiveness.

^ Maybe they just should have done a condo conversion on the King County Jail.

They sold a good amount of condo's for it's "ugliness." I don't think it's bad enough that I would say all the things Seattle206 said, I just don't think they should leave the concrete parts exposed because the brown and the gray don't look good together.

The renderings in the first page make it look nice from the West but the First Ave. view isn't as nice as I first thought it would be.

Should the Martin still be in the first page? It's been out for quite a while.

And!!! When I first heard about the Heron/Pagoda tower I thought it was a great idea. Then I saw the second design and I liked it but not for the part of the city where it's at. I wouldn't mind giving up the Westin for the old Heron Tower design but I don't want to see blocky towers from West Seattle. I did like the rooftop greenhouse though, that would've been something to really pay a lot for and the first high-rise condo with that feature.

I would just like to point out that I said it first. Glad to hear everyone else here has decent eye sight. I'm not going to go back 15 or so pages, but there was a very nice looking building we all liked (very futuristic/cutting edge) that will probably get butchered by the planning review commisision.

With regards to the messed up windows installation (Olive 8 and another building), it will be fixed but even if it wasn't the building would still look far better than the Four Seasons. It looks like an above ground bomb shelter.

I will dig out a picture of the Four Seasons built in San Francisco in the last 10 years. It's a great hotel. I've only recently got used tio call the Olympic Hotel the Fairmont. Every time I drive by it I think of the prison they're building the New Four Seasons in.

Great comment, you made me laugh. The inmates could act as the valet and the housekeepers after the conversion is complete!

Glass on towers is always being put in the wrong place, but you usually don't notice it when all the panes are the same. Of course they will fix it. I'm a little disappointed with 4 seasons as well. Strange color combination.

One thing that bugs me about 4 Seasons is that the facade on the east and north faces doesn't go out all the way to the NE edge as can be seen here:

If anyone is interested.......I just noticed that "The Slender Thread" will be on TCM Tues afternoon 03-25-08. It is interesting to see Seattle circa 1965 with virtually no skyline other than the space needle. It's also a decent film with Sidney Poiter and Anne Bancroft.

^ Thanks for the heads up! Nice to know there's a movie set in Seattle from that era that doesn't include Elvis.

Anne Bancroft is a depressed housewife who wants to commit suicide and Poitier is the volunter at the call center who tries to talk her out of it. In between calls to him she drives all over the city in her new station wagon. It's almost a travelogue. Oh and her husband who doesn't understand her is the captain of a fishing boat. How Seattle is that?

Went by 8th and Seneca on Saturday and noticed that most of the windows on the east side of the apartment building have been removed. There were a few holes in the side as well. Looks like demo work has begun.
