A copper or earth colored terra cotta would look amazing as well.

850 N State Street now has construction fencing up for that 2 story addition for new shops on the State Street side. The building permits for it came in a few weeks ago. The building has been building a new lobby/entrance to go on the Chestnut Street side now instead which I've heard will open in the next few weeks. Wouldn't be surprised to see this thing starting in the next month. If you need a refresher (You can see where the new entrance will go on the left partially):

YES. I was disappointed by the parking ratio at first, but then remembered it's replacing the current underground garage that serves the Windermere across the street.

love the building, but the fact that they still haven't ever shown how the back will look worries me.

Chicago & Wells Smithfield tower was approved last night by the plan commission according to Curbed. Not mentioned in the article - they also received a building permit to build a 1 story sales office on site yesterday. They also had a demolition permit issued the other week. This one is moving fast.

They will be condos selling for between $1M and $4M. Also thought this was mildly interesting

Chicago and Wells will have an "active corner," with ground floor offices featuring a new home for the headquarters of Smithfield Properties. The corner will feature constant illumination throughout the evening hours and residential units on lower floors would be oriented towards the corner as well.

Crews are already demoing the buildings on Wells just north of the corner building that will be coming down. This is a pretty big loss for the intersection in my opinion.

It is a bigger loss than normal. A lot of buildings have been going into vacant lots downtown or demoing architecturally insignificant buildings. These buildings were pretty nice. I walk by them from time to time since i live not far away. It doesn't seem like they are that full of activity which may have made it easier for Smithfield to pull this off.

Taken just now:

They probably aren't that full of activity because they have been planning on tearing them down, so not renewing leases, etc. I'd probably be less upset by it if the building going up wasn't complete shit.

I've always loved that building. I was hoping that since the others were knocked down and it was still standing that it might have been saved.

Lets not confuse "the city" with the thousands and thousands of private landowners out there.

Should the city have landmarked these buildings? I'm not saying that they shouldn't have, I'm just asking. They were historic, but was there something specifically special about them?
