Photos: Memorial Hermann’s Susan and Fayez Sarofim Pavilion tops out

By Olivia Pulsinelli – Senior web editor, Houston Business Journal
Sep 27, 2018, 2:51pm CDT Updated Sep 27, 2018, 8:21pm

Memorial Hermann Health System celebrated the topping out of its new tower in the Texas Medical Center Sept. 24.

The 17-story tower is named for Susan and Fayez Sarofim, who donated $25 million for the project. It’s the largest gift Memorial Hermann has ever received, the health care system said when the gift was announced in February 2018. Susan Sarofim was the chair of the Memorial Hermann Foundation board between 2015 and 2017.

The Susan and Fayez Sarofim Pavilion is expected to be complete in 2020. It will house the Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-TMC, one of only two Level I trauma centers in Houston; the John S. Dunn Burn Center, the only comprehensive burn center in the city; and other critical care services. Memorial Hermann Life Flight also will move to the new tower.

The tower is part of Memorial Hermann’s $650 million expansion and renovation of its Texas Medical Center campus, which will also include:

160 additional beds (plus 71 replacement beds)
24 operating rooms (19 replacement and five additional)
16 additional emergency center bays
more than 600 new parking spaces
a 335-seat café
It will also feature seven shelled or unfinished floors, including six operating rooms, that are expected to be constructed to accommodate future growth. The expansion will grow the TMC campus to 3.84 million square feet from its current total of roughly 2.5 million square feet.

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center opens new critical care tower

Quote:
A new critical care tower offering Level 1 trauma support has recently opened at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, at 6411 Fannin St, Houston.

According to a news release from the hospital, the 17-story Susan & Fayez Sarofim Pavilion serves as the new home of the Red Duke Trauma Institute, offering more than 140 patient rooms, 24 operating rooms, 900 new parking spaces, a new 76,000-square foot emergency center, and one of the few dedicated trauma hybrid operating rooms in the nation, allowing for multi-disciplinary care. according to the news release.

In addition, the pavilion is the new home to the John S. Dunn Heliport, offering 10,000 square feet more space than the previous helipad.

The tower is named for the Sarofim couple, who in 2018 made a $25 million gift in support of Memorial Hermann-TMC’s Breaking New Ground $700 million renovation and expansion project, which initially kicked off in 2015.
