Gritty Cities

Thought I'd start a thread dedicated to found photo grit. I'll kick it off with a photo album from Steve Rollo on Flickr. He covers Newburgh, NY which is a Hudson River city which has been experiencing a severe decline ove the past several decades. Though there are efforts underway to stabilize the city, mixed results.

Now the pics.... a link to Steve's "Newburgh" album:

Here's an example of his pics highlighting the crime/gang issue affecting the city:

Here's an album from Joe Augstell on Flickr covering some grit in Buffalo, NY. It's mostly abandoned houses, but there's some other stuff in there too.

A sunrise shot of downtown the early morning haze adds to the gritty feel in the foreground the soon to be hopefully not so gritty Michigan Central Depot.

Cairo, Illinois has had a rather checkered past, and over the last 100 years has gone from over 15,000 residents to a bit over 2,000.
More info:

Here's a link to some Flickr pics from Bruce Wicks. Some nice buildings, but also plenty of abandoned grit:

Unfortunately not all cities have the federal government to pull them from the murder capital of the country (DC) to a thriving city which is what it is today.

Thank You Ex: for posting the gritty city photos. First time I had to stop viewing anything on skyscrasperpage. I know those scenes are out there for me it's to much to view them. I know my history, and know what happened to all these towns. I'm sure you all do too. The leadership both parties have sold this country out long ago, I just pray, and hope it's not to late. I'm going to view those photos sometime not in my current feelings they should be seen by everyone.

Maynard MA.

Lawrence MA.
From Boston Magazine

The old mill cities here in Massachusetts really give off the same vibe as some of the rust belt cities.
Maynard is doing a lot better now than it once was, the mill was converted into offices, early tenants like Monster.com really became the economic engine working to revive the town.
