South Congress Hotel Development & Question

Looks like the food trailers on south congress will have to relocate in March.

Apologies if there is already a thread for this development, but does anyone have any renderings, recent or historic, for the proposed hotel going up there under the owner SoCo ATX?

This project doesn't have a thread of its own yet, so why don't we just utilize this one for this project going forward?

Does the project have a name yet? It's an okay looking development that will interact with the street (judging from the limited views that we have that you posted) well. And that's really all that matters on SoCo. There really aren't any large development opportunities left on SoCo, unfortunately (not that there really ever were any). We've got this lot, the NE corner of SoCo and Mary, the Church if it ever decides to relocate or shutter, and Fulmore if the school is ever decommissioned (which I highly doubt would ever happen).

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that the hotel wants to incorporate a trailer or two into their design. You can see an airstream with a cupcake on it in that first rendering in the courtyard. I really like that idea.

That would be really nice. It would really ingratiate them to all the locals who are no doubt pissed off that the trailers had to move. Have the trailers found a new spot on SoCo yet?

Here is the Site Plan review page. It's still being reviewed by the city, so no building elevations yet showing the height or design.

The address is 1603 South Congress.

Also, this is being engineered by Big Red Dog Engineers. They're doing a lot of projects in Austin including the South Lamar Plaza development, Tree (The Genesee), Austin Playhouse, P. Terry's, The Container Bar, The District at SoCo (501 East Oltorf).

They seemed to take forever to get the 2nd floor up.

I don't remember, is this going to have valet parking along Congress? I certainly hope not. I'm a little nervous about traffic coming and going there so close to the bike lane, and that's the downhill stretch.

Monroe street on the north side will have the valet area and garage access. Dick Clark architects has a rendering, but I'm too lazy to find it.

I think this is going to be a pretty snazzy hotel. If memory serves me correctly, the investors of this hotel own Hotel Ella near campus. However, I am not sure if it will be run under the Small Luxury Hotels of the World brand or another. Grupo Habita/Design Hotels have been working on an "Austin project..." At one point, I thought I read that this "project" may be located on South Congress. If this is their project, it will be a great addition to the Austin hospitality scene. Grupo Habita & Design Hotels run some of the coolest small boutique hotels on the planet. I have been lucky enough to stay in a few in Europe, Africa, South America and Mexico.

Don't misunderstand me...Small Luxury Hotels have some really cool properties as well. I simply prefer Grupo Habita & Design Hotels over them.

I think they managed to capture the style of the avenue pretty well. At least of the trendier, newer places:

Another SoCo boutique hotel - with 100 rooms - is proposed. I cancelled my Statesman subscription, so I can't get beyond the pay wall for details:

http://www.statesman.com/news/busine...-congre/nhPYx/

"Another upscale boutique hotel could be coming to the South Congress area.
The proposed Terrace Hotel is a new concept that Austin businesswoman Liz Lambert plans to build on 1.2 acres at Academy Drive and Music Lane, just off South Congress Avenue. The project would include about 100 hotel rooms, 15 condominiums, a restaurant and a cocktail lounge, according to plans filed with the city of Austin."

The ABJ isn't hiding their story of the new proposed SoCo hotel behind a pay wall:

Some of those projects, though, are still leaving a lot to be desired. That Jefferson one is pretty much just a bigger apartment complex with no street level retail. Not that there are really any pedestrians along South Congress even with the bus routes, but still. That area isn't going to be the same forever. I'd like to see what is new actually offer something that makes it more pleasant and human scaled, not just more cars. The street needs attention, too. The bike lanes disappear as you cross Williamson Creek, and there is no street lighting through there either.
