Uh, not really.
The travel times:
Megabus claims ~90 minutes. I'm not sure how often they actually hit that, and how often they get stuck in traffic (I've definitely spent longer than that stuck on I35).
The express LStar projects 75 minutes downtown to downtown.
destinations:
Megabus has only two, 20th St. in Austin and 4th in San Antonio (I'm not familiar enough with San Antonio to judge if that end is truly downtown or not).
LStar plans stops in San Marcos and New Braunfels even on the express runs, and ~16 stops otherwise.
frequency:
From the Megabus web site, it looks like 12 runs (6 each way) tomorrow. 32 for the LStar.
Though I agree it has the advantages of already being available, and not costing major $ to build.
But if the train has a bar car, I think the advantage will tilt back over there.
