Looks like you didn't have to wait that long (2 months).

I never understood why they didn't install bollards. There's a couple shops on my street that have ones that slide up out of the ground.

Grandpa realized it was over two weeks into January and forgot to buy those Christmastime iPods for his grandchildren...at 6:30 PM on a Sunday night and only 30 minutes to spare before the store closed, he figured he had no time to loose.

Seriously though, why they hadn't considered installing bollards at the start is beyond me. I'm guessing it would have interrupted the store's iFeng-Shui, or something.

Like I said then, River North is the obvious and logical area to see a bunch of development once Streeterville is build out and I think we're starting to see that happening. There's not that many vacant land left in Steeterville and the amenities that River North provides are unmatched.

Also, I read this article several months ago, I believe it was an article from Chicago Magazine or something, where Friedman was interviewed. His family is credited as being a pioneer in the transformation of River North. They were the ones who started investing in the neighborhood when it was still a slum and are still today one of, if not, the largest owner of properties in the neighborhood. Anyway, in the article he mentioned how he had big plans for RN once the economy recovered. So I believe the next decade or two will be great for the neighborhood and I'll definitely be here to witness all the changes.
I personally think River North, West Loop and South Loop will all continue to grow with residential developments once the economy starts to recover. But you are probably right in that River North will benefit the most since the center of gravity for development seems to be tilted slightly to the north. But we will see how additional transit stops and potential commercial developments near large facilities like United center and McCormick affect the near south and west sides as well.

I wonder how the CHS projects in River North will affect its expansion. There's an odd dichotomy along Chicago Ave where shiny new apartment/condo highrises are across the street from projects or family services and the vagrancies they collect.

A former coworker lives in a new building on Chicago/Larabee and a block north is a liquor store entirely behind glass. I think there's a homeless shelter near there.

The South Loop has its share of poverty-related crime, but it seems to swell up from the south. In River North, there are small pockets of it sequestered right inside of where they're trying to redevelop. Are there any other examples of something like that happening?

Tour through new U of C Hospital: link.

Rockwell Market & Cafe, the first upmarket project in the newly renovated Congress Theater storefronts, is shaping up nicely.

...and a few pics from their website:

This building at Western and Cortland broke ground yesterday.

Lastly, anyone know what's going on, if anything, at the Coyote Building? Just noticed these on the building the other day:

Reinforcement for old masonry? Markings of some kind?

^ Wow, I would have preferred something far more dense, but I can't complain about the loss of a vacant lot and retail facing the street next to an L stop. Question is, is that a row of townhomes I'm seeing or a trio of 6 flats?

I agree, should at least be 4 stories. Are they apartments or for sale?

Look like brackets for billboard-type signs.

Seems like it would have been a great place for a 6-8 story Euro-style apartment building with less than 1 parking space per unit, but then again Chicago governance seems to hate such things.

This development was discussed at length a few months back in this thread. Why not close to 10 stories?... right next to the L?... whats wrong with this city?... blahblahblah.

What an atrocious development. The city should zone land adjacent to L stations to require minimum density. It's a scandal.

I agree. Why isn't this building around 10 stories high. How could they allow this right next to the Blue Line EL? I can't reiterate this question enough, what the hell is wrong with this city?

It's a trio of attached 6-flats, although IIRC the end one facing Western is actually a 5-flat since the top floor is a penthouse.

17 units is a lot better than 6 townhouses, for what it's worth.
