Miami

First time I had been back in the city since I spent 2 months there in the summer of 1997. Things sure have changed. Miami from 2 decades ago seems like an entirely different, far more provincial place.

Dade County Courthouse:

My favorite Miami skyscraper 20 years ago. Sadly it's mostly obscured now due to some IMO rather average new highrises:

A small survivor in a sea of highrises:

Can't say that I enjoyed the temps. Constant humidity makes it virtually impossible for a central European to survive outside. What I did like though were the cloud formations thanks to the weather:

More to come...

It really is an incredible city, it's been over a year since I last went.

Great pics.

Totally agree that Pei's building is still an amazing standout (and still my favorite in the city). Most of the new towers are so blocky and blah. Looking forward to the completion of Hadid's tower.

Great clarity in your pictures. Love the lifeguard tower and the shots of the Dade County Courthouse in particular.

The Dear Leader

can you explain this comment by you ?

"First time I had been back in the city since I spent 2 months there in the summer of 1997. Things sure have changed.

How is Miami more "provincial"?
It's more International now than it was back in 1997 when you spent 2 months there I presume?

Also are the changes good in your opinion ?

Your photos are fantastic !

I think I may have worded that in a slightly convoluted manner. I think the Miami of the late 1990s was more "provincial" than today's Miami, not the other way around. I remember not being overly impressed by its skyline in 1997, having just flown in from Frankfurt.

I'd say the city has definitely become more interesting in terms of some of its architecture. What struck me nonetheless was the sense that quite a few apartments appeared empty. Don't know if people just buy some places for certain periods of the year or simply acquire them as an investment. I did ask myself on a few occasions though who exactly lived in all those apartment blocks that have gone up over the last 20 years. Did Miami create that many new jobs? Or are they the 2nd or 3rd homes of wealthy Latin Americans? In terms of living costs I was also quite astonished. Buying a few groceries at Publix would set you back $50...stuff for which I'd pay perhaps no more than 25 to 30 euros back home (and I'm not necessarily living in the poorest part of Germany). I don't really have a gauge though if it was quite this expensive 20 years ago since I wasn't buying the groceries back then.
