On to Euro pt 6. Leaving London, my next stop was Edinburgh - Athens of the North. The feeling of the city was very different from London, though it really isn't fair to compare the two. Edinburgh is smaller and quieter than I had pictured. While the Royal Mile is impressive, I found it overwhelmed with tourists and shops that cater to them. I made a concerted effort to wander outside the core to see more of the city. However, once I walked more than half a mile the bustle of the city dropped off and I found myself often alone on a quiet street.
Two things of note I stumbled upon:
The city was getting ready for armed forces week had a few marketing events during the day. I went to explore calton hill and noticed a dozen press photographers gathered at the top. They said a local celebrity, Lorraine Kelly, was being flown in by helicopter, from which she would repel and then shoot one of the artillery guns placed there for the event. You'll see the shots.
I was in Edinburgh back in June which was right when 'slut walks' were occurring in cities around the world. On my last day in the city I came across 'Slut walk- Edinburgh'. You'll see the shots.
She was supposed to shoot the gun when given the command 'FIRE!'. One of the men started counting down from five, but as soon as he said 'FIVE!' she must have heard 'Fire', and shot the gun prematurely. I was prepping for the countdown so I missed the actual firing. You can see her realizing her mistake.
No Nikon love?
These two girls were hanging around the slut walk posing for the press. I think they just liked the attention.
This was definitely planned.
That's it fur th' UK. Next up i'll heed e'en further north tae Icelain.
Great collection of photos as always, you are right about the Royal mile it's just a historic Disneyland where the locals wouldn't be see dead in.The problem with Edinburgh is it has that many nooks and crannies that unless you have a bit of local knowledge there is lots you can miss. These are my favorite buildings the one at the back is Tony Blair's old school
Originally I was going to ask what kind of job do you have that takes all around the world, but after viewing this photo thread I now know you're a paid photographer crusading the world to help make every urban city look just that much more spectacular.
I know your photography is outstanding, but, in my opinion, I kind of feel like this set was your strongest or among your top 3! (*goes to check all of your previous photo threads*)
I would like to vote this set thread of the year!...
I remember seeing some of these on flickr. Crushing set!!! I liked this more then the London set. The landscape/cityscape shots were really nice. I like all the cool blues.
What a colourful thread! Edinburgh is one of just a handful of U.K. cities I find interesting. Edinburgh seems quite hip, vibrant, and artsy, as well as with a lot of historical character. Comparable, I've heard, to Austin, Edmonton, Portland, Calgary, and Providence. Very beautiful as always !

well im sure theyll do ok without your recommendation..calgary?Edmonton? are you taking the piss sunshine?
fern - That's how I felt about the city. I knew there had to be more going on but without knowing anyone to show me around I think I missed a lot. I really wanted to head to the highlands for a few days too, not enough time.
ChiTownCity - Thanks! Travel and photography are just hobbies right now. I'm working towards integrating them with my career.
diskojoe - good memory, I think I uploaded most of these several months ago. Edinburgh in the summer is great for blue hour shots. As Tayser mentioned its 55 degrees north so the blue hour lasts forever.
Brickell - I can't say I was trying for a dark theme, true to form it rained on and off most of the time I was there.
ue - I can't judge how the art scene of Edinburgh compares to other cities but when I was looking for some local tunes to accompany this thread I came across an article stating much of the live music scene of Edinburgh had dried up recently. I certainly felt more like a city with strong traditions than one pushing artistic change.
Same, I find it looks beautifully picturesque. This is even like the 3rd time I come to this thread. I've been pretty astonished actually, as I have nearly no idea of Scotland. From seeing this, if I was the Queen, I would move there.
I don't know how big Edinburgh's arts scene is, so thanks for your perspective. It's just something I've heard about Edinburgh, especially with the world's largest Fringe Theatre Festival.

No need to get defensive, to each their own. Yes, Edmonton and to a lesser extent Calgary have decent arts scenes for cities of their size, though without a doubt Austin and Portland are more artsy fartsy. Oh, and all the U.K. cities seem to do well, whether I find each and every single one interesting or not.
