I have always liked the way the Sheraton looked. But once I saw the pictures that HX Guy posted, I love it even more. It is a great building that looks great. I love the colors and the pattern that the windows make. I find it very soothing to look at.

Thanks HX Guy for some great photos!!!!

Sheraton dominates the skyline

I made a trip from Denver down to Phoenix last weekend and went downtown to check out the progress. I was stunned by the dominance of the Sheraton on the skyline.

I am going to withold final judgment on the appearance and design of the building until it is completely finished, but I could not ignore how much it stood out from the north and from the east. Maybe it is the lighter color in contrast to most of the other buildings, the "slab" effect from the north, or the perceived height from the east that makes it stand out so much.

While I appreciate the design and aesthetic of 44 Monroe, and would rate it to be vastly superior to the Sheraton, it seemed lost in the forest of other buildings.

I really did not expect this building (the Sheraton) to make so much of a statement, good or bad. At this point I will say that it has added some significant density and impact to our "compact" downtown, which is still very much needed.

I also noticed something last night. The red signs that are lit with the name and log, really add something to the nighttime skyline.

As does the Mid First Bank signage...the skyline is looking a lot more colorful these days.

I work downtown and often at night, the more I see it the more the Sheraton grows on me (though I never really hated the building to begin with). I like it alot and it makes a huge impact to the skyline.

Had a friend visiting from LA over the weekend. Took him downtown and wihtout any prompting from me, he said: Oh my God, what is that? He was talking about the Sheraton and he meant it in a very good way. There's no denying, it has a commanding presence downtown. And with the signage etc it looks really good, especially (but not limited to) dusk, just as the sun's setting.

I will admit is has grown on me slightly as far as the impact it has on the skyline.... and the signage and tower base.
But I'm not ready to act like I am 100% pleased with the design....

It's kind of like the overweight, mildly attractive chick that is nice and sweet as can be. I'm still not gonna date her.

Yeah, but after you've knocked back a half dozen to a dozen cold ones she's good enough for the night!

pleased with it/ what's wrong with everyone!!! the mix of red and brown and tan,the colors of throw-up.
it's not even modern and it's made so cheap, where's the glass facade! last time i saw it i almost thru-up... literally.
For being the richest country in the world, we should be building skyscrapers at least somewhat better than other countries.

Yeah, but you're also talking about a place that has an actual economy based off of something, which is basically the gas that Phoenicians use to sit in traffic and go from the strip mall to the suburban house. If we kept that money at home, built real cities, then we would care about our architecture looked like. But, you can't expect any architectural quality when you're sealed off from the urban sphere in a car.

I think Dubai will be a hellish place to live when those buildings start to lose some of their luster. Good urban design makes all those tall buildings work, or in Dubai's case, fail.

At least the Sheraton doesn't define our city, b/c I would sue the dictionary people. It certainly has a strong impact, whatever your feelings of that impact may be.
