driving down our street today i slid a few times, its like an ice rink, its awful. a few cars couldn't make the trip up the street at all. Side streets are awful, more snow is going to make them really bad, fresh snow on hard crusty thick layer of ice. yuck.

I bet a lot of Coquitalmers are questioning why they bought up in Westwood plateau right now.

Officially a Canadian city.

Trout Lake in Vancouver now safe to skate on, says Park Board.

"According to the park board, the last time Vancouver's lake and ponds were safe for public skating was in 1996".

I find most of the streets up on Westwood Plateau are in a much better shape than those side streets in Vancouver...

Burquitlam area is pretty bad, haven't been up westwood way. East Van is really bad, the streets are so rutty and its so icy.

I was at a Canadian tire in east van earlier today, they are rationing sidewalk salt, only one per customer, when i was lined up i counted about 25 people buying one and the line up kept growing behind me and pretty much everyone had one

If you can afford a house with a driveway in the city of Vancouver, you can surely afford to go to the store and buy salt. Standing in the cold for 2 hours for free salt is asinine, your time has to be more valuable than that!

Hear, hear, but the problem is that all stores are out of salt in all of Metro Vancouver. Even in Bellingham stores are running out of salt as Canadians are making their way there to buy salt!

It comes down to being prepared, even if you don't need it for years, salt doesn't spoil. Buy when the need is low at the start of the season.

After living in Toronto, it's also a good idea to keep a bag in the trunk of your car if you lose traction, a crushed stone/sand and salt mix works best. *and a small snow shovel!

Fucking clowns. Have some patience and civility.

What are these assholes going to be like when a real emergency, such as a major earthquake, hits.

Really embarrassing.

From The Globe and Mail

Quote:
Brian Carter, Burnaby’s manager of public-works operations, said this winter snow has been far worse than the 2008 snowfall that was a wake-up call for many municipalities.

“There was a lot of snow in 2008,” but it was mostly one big snowfall at the beginning, he said, “not five or six events a couple of days apart where you then have a freeze and thaw and then bleed water that refreezes the road.”

Yeah, 2008 was a huge dump at once, then a pretty solid frozen stretch. This year has been a terrible freeze / thaw cycle (creating a lot more ice) and smaller more numerous snow / rain events.

I remember the snow in 2008 being pretty powdery and light (until January that is, when it became heavy and wet and took an entire month to melt in Metrotown).

It is embarrassing to watch those videos.

Anyway, the video from National Post is more relaxing.

Yes. The salt supply problem. Terrible. But it's always nice to see good samaritans, such as well-known Global BC news sports anchor Squire Barnes, chip in:

In other news, here are the Top 10 snowiest Decembers at YVR:

Daily Hive article:

December was the coldest month in Vancouver in almost a decade

The average mean temperature for the month of December in both 2008 and 2016 was 0.9 °C.

Have to go back to 1993 to find a colder year when the mean December temperature was 0.4 °C.

Despite less total snowfall at YVR. Other parts of the city have been under snow for a month now.

I'm wondering if we could be close to setting a record for longest stretch of time with snow and ice on the ground in some places around Metro Vancouver? Usually it does not last a month or more.

It does spoil! I found a pile of water in my garage in the summer and I had a total freak out that I had a leak. Turned out the salt had absorbed enough humidity to liquefy.

I made a point of getting off the beaten track to see what I could see yesterday on my weekly visit to the Kerrisdale area on the West Side of Vancouver. Here are some pics.

I think you broke your salt.
