Arrow Rochester's Wegmans Expansion

Wegmans plans office expansion in ChiliCHILI — Wegmans officials presented the first conceptual review plan for a 400,000-square-foot facility to the Planning Board on Tuesday.

Judging by the board's response, the project could be approved in two to three months.

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is proposing to build the office building on Market Street as part of the final phase of a plan to consolidate 1,600 corporate headquarters employees in a single location.

The privately owned grocery chain already has an office building on its Fisher Road site, built in two phases over the last several years, said company spokeswoman Jo Natale.

Wegmans Expansion Adds Local Jobs
A home grown company is making the attempt to keep jobs in Rochester. Wegmans presented an expansion proposal to the Chili Town Planning Board that could create a few hundred jobs in coming years.

Wegmans headquarters on Brooks Ave. will be a little less crowded if the Chili Town Planning Board approves the expansion.

The proposal looks to the Wegmans Industrial Park on Market Street off Chili Avenue.

Wegmans reps say the 400,000 sq. ft., four story project hopes to relieve crowded offices in other locations.

It could also bring hundreds of job opportunities in years to come. Tuesday night's conceptual review was an initial introduction to the building project.

Good to see that Wegmans (the best supermarket store around, IMO) is going to stay and grow in the Rochester area. I just wish they'd put a store in Chesapeake Beach, MD.

Yeah, its not pronounced Chili but CHYE-lye.

Rochester has a few town names that end up like that.

Charlotte pronounced shar-LOT, I believe it is French if I remember right that someone told me that.

Wegmans has a location in Erie.

It's an excellent supermarket... about on par with the Giant Eagle Market District in Shadyside.

When i was in rochester visiting my brother, a woman told me about wegmans and said that i HAD to visit it before i went home, so i went and didnt understand what she ment. It looked like a regular supermarket to me. Is it supposed to be something above and beyond or was i just dealing with a loopy person?

I really really wish Wegman's would push into Pittsburgh. Giant Eagle really needs to be taken on by someone else, and I bet Wegman's would really put a serious hurting on them. We need some damn competition!

^ The two Wegmans locations in Erie sell beer! And a great beer selection it is. Actually probably one of the best beer selections I've seen in any store anywhere... and I'm a beer aficionado (well, maybe not an aficionado, just a guy who has enjoys the finer ales, stouts, porters, etc.).

No locations in Delaware that I'm aware of, but they have made it into the Mid-Atlantic market (Philadelphia, South Jersey, Baltimore, DC, Northern Virginia). We'll probably be an overlooked market again, but oh well. If/when Wegmans gets into Northern Delaware, I know that my mom will be overjoyed. Sometimes she shops there and brings groceries down from Buffalo when visiting relatives.

Wegmans is a great market... variety and all the staples in a nice, clean environment with local produce. I don't find it to be the Shangri-La that many others seem to though (I never understand why it is described as a must-see for visitors???), it's pretty much just the grocery store done right. I mainly like it because they have made progress in conquering PA's puritanical alcohol laws by selling beer, and crafty microbrews and imports at that.
