The ownership has intended to build a high rise community here for over 20 years. I don't expect anything to update for a long time.

I didn't even know London's City Centre Mall was no more.

It's just the stores and indoor shopping area of the TD/Canada Trust towers at Wellington & Dundas. It's just what they use to call it back in the 70s & 80s.

I don't think there is any shopping to speak of at the base of these concrete blocks.

This channel is mostly NS. Hilariously awful malls all over the place.

Oof, looks better than the mall in Stettler did in the 90s. I don't know if it has been demolished for a Walmart or what not but. . .

Besides the terribly outdated decor, the retail mix seems fairly good compared to truly failing malls. Is Dollarama seriously one of the anchor stores in the mall though?

Sport Check, Tip Top Tailers, etc. It looks fine. Lots of local retailers too, but they don't look particularly poorly done either. I've seen far weaker malls in larger communities than Gander.

That's pretty much what every mall in the province looks like outside the city. As far as Gander goes, the Fraser Mall is far worse. Wal-Mart used to anchor the Gander Mall but moved into a standalone a few years ago, Canadian Tire took over their spot as an anchor.

The Fraser Mall is anchored by Foodland (Sobey's) and also boasts a Great Canadian Dollar Store, CIBC branch, and Gov't of NL Offices! Oh my!
Fraser Mall

That link will also allow you to look at the Marystown Mall, Millbrook Mall (Corner Brook) and Valley Mall (Corner Brook) all of which are probably half empty. Apparently the Sterling Group is just a sucker for the downtrodden mall.

EDIT: I should add to that opening line: Gander Mall looks like most of the malls in our service centre towns. (Gander, GFW, S'ville, Clarenville). There are a slew of malls in places like Port-aux-Basques, Lewisporte, St. Anthony, and Placentia which are entirely dreadful but serve their purposes for local groceries, pharmacy, dollar store, etc... without having to drive for hours to the next closest town.

Why is it all of the dead or busy but shitty malls have those pathetic kids rides we all used to love as toddlers? Just for fun, those dead malls vs. in my mind shopping hell.

Milbrooke Mall looks pretty sad. Reminds me of the former Alberni Mall in Port Alberni, BC

Struggling malls tend to have these extra revenue streams - a way of getting patrons to pay for using the mall without increasing rents. Almost every dying mall contains one or more of the following:

- Kiddie rides
- Bank of gumball machines
- Arcade games such as the claw

They are all good ways to help strengthen cash flow for REITs.

That's busier than ours ever gets.

They need better theme music, though. J. and I always sing Wonderful Grand Band's (our first CODCO/This Hour-style show) old tribute to the Avalon Mall in St. John's whenever we go to one.

In the late 70s Cavendish Mall played a part in David Cronenberg's movie Rabid. The main character, played by porn actress Marilyn Chambers, takes a walk from downtown and somehow ends up several kilometres later at Cavendish Mall, in the far reaches of Cote St. Luc. It all seems to happen in the blink of an eye.

At this point in the film the plague is spreading and "typhoid Marilyn" aka Rose is oblivious to what she has started. A victim of the plague tries to bite someone and all hell breaks loose, culminating in the accidental shooting of the Cavendish Mall Santa Claus.

And here it is! at 1.05.28

So is this the same Cavendish Mall that Just For Laughs got the princess from for Fred Savage?

Must be, but she's a poor excuse for the princesses that used to hang out there.

Love the MAWNTREOLL pronunciation.

the JFL video: lack of expos fans yet a plethora of Big-Owe chunks, lap dancers, inspectors from the OLF etc.

Sounds like a movie that received big time federal funding!

I visited this mall yesterday for the first time, and the first thing I saw when I walked in was Medix School. Instantly I thought of Oxbury Mall in London, which also has Medix. The next thing I noticed was the weird location of the elevator - going in and coming out I felt like I was in a medical office building where I might be going to the orthodontist. After going through a super narrow hallway, I came out in the food court.

It's definitely not the worst mall I have ever been in - that award goes to the aforementioned Oxbury Mall, which last time I was inside had a Food Basics with a caved in ceiling and not a nice modern looking Fortino's. But, it does feel like Yorkdale's less successful younger brother, who manages to make enough to scrape by but buys all his groceries at No Frills and clothes at Giant Tiger. On the bright side, it was busy.
