Talking about downtown development is just talk, particularly when it is preambled with the phrase 'subject to viability'. Get your new arena, sucker the city into paying for it, then get out of the development obligations by calling the 'not viable' clause.

KPMG are not making the recommendation on a whim, they know the score a lot better than we do, and it is no oversight that they did not recommend pursuing with AEG/KATZ along with the other two.

Agreed, until such time as major spin offs are realistic, the city has to stick with who can best reduce the cost of operating HECFI's facilities.

If one of the three big boys can get an NHL team in Hamilton, then they'd bast communicate that to the city behind closed doors somehow.

Secret meeting maybe?

Global/Live Nation strikes me as the odds-on favourite, considering they've been responsible for most of the big name bookings in Hamilton for the past few years.

As far as Hamilton's NHL hopes go, Markham is either simplifying the equation or following the Copps playbook.

Council seem to want to go local as much as possible.

Guessing....

Carmen - Convention Centre (Carmen beat Vrancor because they don't want any subsidy)
Sonic - Hamilton Place
AEG/Katz - Copps

Five HECFI bidders still in the game

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...ll-in-the-game

Councillors have directed staff and KPMG to enter discussions with five potential operators to run HECFI facilities.

The decision goes against consultant recommendation to narrow negotiations down to two large entertainment groups.

Councillors heard a presentation by KPMG Friday about six bidders’ proposals for running Hamilton Place, Copps Coliseum and the Hamilton Convention Centre.

KPMG proposed beginning discussions with Global Spectrum/Live Nation and SMG/ Forum Equity out of the proponents who submitted a private-management plan.

The city has spent about $329,000 on consulting costs to date.

Councillors also approved a motion to have proponents not speak to media during the bidding process.

Live Nation is the largest concert promoter in the world and Global Spectrum manages many convention centres and sports venues around the world, including a new facility at the former Maple Leaf Gardens site in Toronto.

SMG manages numerous arenas, including two NHL venues. Forum Equity is a Toronto-based development firm.

The other bidders, Carmen’s Group, Sonic Unyon, Vrancor Group and AEG/Katz Group, only want to manage one of the three venues.

KPMG argued the larger proponents have more “management depth,” better NHL relocation prospects, and extensive industry relationships, but indicate there is no single clear-cut, leading bidder.

According to a report compiled by the consultants, proposals were ranked as follows: SMG/Forum Equity, Global Spectrum/Live Nation, AEG/Katz Group, Carmen’s Group, Vrancor Group and Sonic Unyon.

Almost a year ago, council dissolved the arms-length HECFI board and fired CEO Duncan Gillepsie to form a committee of councillors to find a private company to purchase, lease or manage all of any of the three facilities.

Typical, they overspent on consultants ($329,000?!?) and didn't even go with their recommendations.

Yes they did. They are negotiating with the two that were recommended by KPMG. (Global Spectrum/Live Nation & SMG/Forum Equity)

They decided to also negotiate a third option. They are not excluding those that are recommended by KPMG.

KPMG did not recommend to not pursue the other options. In fact, KPMG provided the other option.

This makes sense to me.
Hamilton has bowed to big business for too long.
Its time a few local businesses were rewarded.

Is it 1981?

That's awesome.

Who says HECFI needs help?

I groaned too when a friend pulled me to one of his concerts at least ten years ago. But the show he put on was one of the most memorable I've ever seen.

No special stage effects or anything like that -- just album-perfect renditions of his whole repertoire done with a genuineness and energy that you don't find often.

He is a gentleman, showman, and classic rocker in the old school tradition.

I don't doubt it for one minute. Some of the best acts I've ever seen are from that era. It's my preference in fact. However, I do think it speaks volumes about Hamilton Place etc. Hopefully George sells some tickets.

Global venue player bails on HECFI privatization bid

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...vatization-bid

In a surprise move on the eve of a special HECFI privatization meeting, the world’s largest venue management company and its partner have withdrawn their bid to run Copps Coliseum.

Los Angeles-based Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and Edmonton-based Katz Group notified the city Monday that they are no longer taking part in the privatization talks.

Katz spokesperson Patrick LaForge said the partners came to the decision while putting the finishing touches on the proposal they were planning to present to city councillors along with those from other bidders Wednesday.

LaForge said they weren’t comfortable with the operating numbers they were receiving for Copps Coliseum.

“It puts all the risk on our back. And the numbers we got, we just didn’t have faith in.”

“I think we wanted accuracy and we wanted reliability.”

Declining to go into detail, LaForge said he wasn’t pointing a finger at the city but that the process just didn’t work for them.

“The process has to work for you, otherwise you’re like a dog chasing a car: What do you do when you get it?”

Councillor Sam Merulla, a driving force behind the privatization option and member of the interim HECFI board, said he was sad to see AEG/Katz drop out.

“But if they didn’t want to meet what the objective of the process is — to eliminate and/or mitigate the subsidies — then obviously they’re not welcome in the process.”

Taxpayer subsidies to HECFI are pegged at about $6.5 million for 2012, but most years they average $7.5 million to $8 million.

AEG/Katz’s withdrawal leaves four other proposals on the table for running the three city-owned HECFI facilities — Copps, Hamilton Place and Hamilton Convention Centre.

In a related development, Sonic Unyon, a local music and arts company that originally bid on running Hamilton Place, is now partnering with SMG and Forum Equity, who are interested in operating all three facilities.

SMG globally manages 77 arenas, 54 theatres and 68 convention centres, including two NHL arenas. Forum Equity is a Toronto based development firm.

The other three bidders are:

Global Spectrum, which manages 40 arenas, 13 stadiums and 32 convention centres around the world, and its partnering bidder, Live Nation, one of the world’s largest concert promoters. They’re interested in managing all of HECFI.

Hamilton-based Carmen’s Group, which is interested in taking over the convention centre.

And the current HECFI management team, which suggests dissolving HECFI and bringing the facilities under the city’s direct control through the planning and economic development department.

All four players will get a chance to pitch their ideas to councillors Wednesday.

City treasurer Tony Tollis, the city’s pointman on the process, said his quick reading of the latest proposals suggests subsidy reductions have been somewhat sweetened since the original submissions.

“There’s definitely more there than there was before.” But “nothing jumps off the page” as a clear-cut winner.

“A lot of it will depend on where council wants to go inevitably.”

Tollis says the presentations will be a high-level opportunity for the proponents to promote themselves and councillors to ask questions. He expects to come back with a detailed report on the options and the financial implications by mid-August.

Meanwhile, LaForge says AEG/Katz is leaving the door open for further discussions if things don’t work out for the city.

Forum equity partner teaming up with Sonic Unyon? Hmm, they already have their feet on the ground with the Cannon Knitting Mills, which is a joint city-Forum thing. Maybe they are tight with the city already?

Carmen is proposing a 44 storey, 440 room hotel with 150 condo units and three world class restaurants. They'll building it within three to five years if awarded the bid.

The hotel brand is not yet in Ontario.

700,000 sq ft complex, 500-800 jobs and tallest hotel in the city.
