Nice diskojoe, I like that building in the forefront on the left. Just got back from a quick trip to Cuba. I processed the shot pretty quickly to get it online today, will probably go back and redo it later.

How'd you get a license to go to Cuba, if you don't mind me asking...???

We just got back from a long weekend to Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands. I just pulled pics off camera, so haven't gone through anything yet. I can't say enough good things about White Sands. Crazy photogenic... Also a crazy cool place for backcountry camping.

No license, just went via Mexico. The Cubans are happy to let you in, though I was almost denied entry due to the amount of camera gear I was carrying. They thought I was a journalist that was there for the Pope's visit. After some negotiating at customs they finally let me go. On the return trip I had planned to use my birth certificate and drivers license to avoid the second entry stamp from Mexico. No such luck, either the guys at immigration were being dicks or the rules have changed; I got two entry stamps from Mexico on the same page. When I went back through the US, I said I visited Mexico and Belize and just hoped the immigration officer didn't look too closely for the non existent Belize stamp. Luckily, the guy didn't even bother looking at the Mexico stamps, he was more interested in my Cambodia and Kenya visas from a few years ago.

You can join a special cultural tour but it's going to cost an arm and a leg and you are extremely constrained because you are with a guided group the whole time. When doing research online, I don't think anyone has gotten in trouble for visiting the country even if they are caught. I think you get a stern talking to and a letter from the feds stating their intent to fine, but they never do so. Though it probably does go on your permanent record which could be bad if you want to work with some level of Gov security clearance.

White sands huh? Did you visit the Trinity site? I haven't been there since I was a kid. Carlsbad is pretty cool too, did you get a chance to visit sitting bull falls? Also a nice spot for photos. What ever happened to your South America threads, you still planning on posting them?

Nice. Hope the OFAC guys aren't skyscraper enthusiasts, I'd hate for you to get in trouble after the fact (they actually do enforce it, although less now. Was enforced more heavily under the W administration). I actually bought tickets to do that once. My plan was PR, to DR, to Cuba - less chance of trouble - but I chickened out at the last minute. Probably good anyways, I never would've gotten security clearances if I had gone. State Dept. frowns on that sort of stuff... Very jealous, though. Looking forward to your pics.

I guess the Trinity site is only open two days per year now for special event tours. Was okay though, there are a million things to do in the area and just not enough time for them all. Unfortunately, I was too early for most blooms - just the yucca are going now, and the rest might skip this year entirely. It's just been too dry for too long. There's no water anywhere, even where there should be.

Yeah, I've fallen behind on my South America photos. I really should do that. I got annoyed with myself after a quick photo run-through, realized I had my ISO set stupidly low in the dark dank jungle, which screwed up a lot. But my goal is to get caught up here in April/May. Not much to do in the muddy season, so it seems like a good time.

Had the opportunity to go to the Trinity site a number of years ago. It was definitely kind of cool, but it really isn't anything too spectacular. Not much to see, other than a few old historical items and a bunch of explanatory signage...
