Best Canadian Songs of All Time

After recently viewing CBC's selections this month of '100 Best Canadian Songs Ever' as compiled by notable Canadians & people in music, I wondered what other listing there are and what SSP forumers think of the artists and order of songs in ranking.

Joni Mitchell tops CBC list,

Guess Who tops National Post,

Maestro Fresh Wes tops HuffPost Music..

I love Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, but would have to think awhile on their two top songs. As someone commented "Four Strong Winds", which was very much more of an iconic song in the 60s, should have placed higher. I especially like Neil Young's album version.

Here's a live version:

I agree with Joni Mitchell being on top.

Not a huge fan of her per say (I prefer covers of her songs), but her general vibe is clearly a significant inspiration for a lot of my favourite artists... Amelia Curran, Joanna Barker (especially), Brandi Carlile (American, but perfect), Danielle Bailey, etc.

Spirit of the West is a personal favourite as well.

But some of these... Titanic theme music? Why not Avril and Bieber? C'mon... Maybe trim the list down to just a Top 10 if you need Titanic to fill in 100.

I can't see the lists as the sites are blocked at my work. I would hope to see Subdivisions and/or Tom Sawyer by Rush up there on the list....

Lil ol' teenage me thought this was the best band Canada had going for it at the time in 1994. I thought the third track at 1:27 was the the coolest thing ever written.

The Flatliners are about as close as I can get to that style of music and still enjoy it. They're probably Canadian? They played here the other weekend.

Subdivisions should be a forum favourite considering the awesomeness of the architecture featured in the video.

I went from metal to punk (thrash metal was my crossover) at 13 years of age. I heard Operation Ivy on UBC radio in 1991, and that was it. I was in a punk band, dying my hair all colours, the whole deal. Now most of the music is enjoyed for the sake of nostalgia.

Stop trolling!

And it's "woman", not "women".

There are some punk classics which are probably worth a mention.

Nomeansno - Dad (1985)

Dayglo Abortions - Proud to be a Canadian (1987)

From industrial and rave:

Front Line Assembly - The Blade (1992)

Delerium feat. Sarah Maclachlan - Silence (1998)

I will add later to this thread when get back from work.

Dayglo Abortions (along with Suicidal Tendencies) were the first punk bands I ever remember listening too. My brother's friend recorded the tapes for us back in '86 or '87.

Feed Us A Fetus is an awesome album still today. A BC classic.

And good call on FLA. I was always a bigger fan of FLA than Skinny Puppy. It was less herion-y to my ears.

Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra needs an award for most concerts played with the fewest people.

Other bands that have had some really stellar stuff: Crash Vegas (Aurora is just a smacking good album.)
