Thumbs up Київ | Kiev (warning: heavy pics, so be patience!)

01) Kiev viewed from the plane.




02) Commieblocks and the river Dnieper.




03) The river is quite wide, which is not strange because in Ukraine the river is full of hydroelectric stations and dams.




04) The skyline of Kiev rises like a wall at the horizon. Urban sprawl is quite rare, but many people dream of suburbia, so i have my doubts if this view of a compact city remains the same in the future.




05) This is the view from my hotelroom. We can see the Kiev TV Tower. This tower is 385m tall and is constructed in 1973. Initially, this tower planned for Moscow, but the people there prefered a more 'solid' tower which resulted in the Ostankino Tower. So this design was used in Kiev, but to please Moscow, the height was shortened by 30 meters.




06) This is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Monastery of the Caves, an Orthodox Christian monastery which was founded in 1015.




07) The giant statue of Rodina Mat, which means 'Nations Mother'. This was build to memorate the war against Nazi-Germany.




08) Apparments at the riverbank. On the right side of this picture, a 402 meter tall skyscraper is planned.

12) The Monastery of Caves is one of the most important monasteries for monks of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It's also interesting to notice that there is a underground network of tunnels and caves beneath.

23) A few minutes walk from the monastery we can find the Museum of the Great Patriotic War.




24) The giant statue, nicknamed Tin Tits is one of the tallest statues in the world. The height is 102 m, from which 62 m is taken by the statue itself. The weight of this lady is 530 ton.

26) These tanks are nowadays a monument for peace.

28) A lot of militairy vehicles were displayed outside, most of them are a heritage of the Soviet Union. These vehicles displayed here were used in the war in Afghanistan.




29) A truck which is, or was, capable of launching nuclear rockets.

33) This part of the city is home to the uber-rich.

36) A lot of expensive German and Japanese cars in Kiev. The Mercedes (AMG) S, BMW 7 or Lexus' are very populair. And relatively speaking, cheap.




37) For the soccer fans, the entrance of Dynamo Kiev's stadium.

41) The independence square, home of the Orange Revolution in 2004.

48) The belltower of the Saint Sophia seen from the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Square. The church is only used in special occasions, because this church is claimed by catholics and orthodox believers.




49) The cathedral is a World Heritage Site.

51) Notice the poster in the background.




52) The building with the dome is the Verkhovna Rada, home of the Ukranian parlement.

54) The St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, but was recently reconstructed after Ukraine gained its independence.

58) Quite common in Kiev, small shops where you can buy food, drinks and sigarettes.

Very nice, I thinks it's the first time I have seen a photo thread on Kiev. Looks like it's buzzing with activity.

very nice!

my impression of kiev, based on one visit ten years ago, was that it felt much more european than either moscow or even st petersburg. i was not expecting much, but it turned out rather impressive. i need to go back soon, before russia invades and takes it over again.

#53 is awesome - i always try to take pictures like that.

Interesting pictures, i assume those weren't made with a digital camera? But why is everybody walking on the Khreschatik street, is the street locked for cars?

^ You're right, the pics were taken with an old non-digital SLR.

Kreschatik was closed for motor vehicles on the weekend evenings. As I understood it was like that every weekend, but I'm not sure. It was very nice!

Kiev is quite impressive. I especially liked #56, the density of the city almost growing out of the forest.
