NEW YORK: canyons & boxes of Midtown (part 2): 6th Ave

Continued from the first thread, which was primarily Park Avenue,
shown here.

6th Avenue, aka Avenue of the Americas, is one of the boxiest of Midtown's canyons.
The towers here are nothing fancy - just big, bold towers that let you know you're in
the Big City, towers seemingly stretching as far as the eye can see in any direction.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2007

Seems like you can't walk 2 blocks in Manhattan without running into a street fair,
so I took advantage of this one to gaze up at the towers of 6th Ave...

Wow! Only in New York could THIS be an often-overlooked building

A little more on the Americas Tower...

___

You can see it under construction on the lower righthand corner of this pic,
an indication of why its often overlooked...

The Americas Tower is so overlooked because not only is it drowned in a community of large boxes, but it also does not break the skyline. The same can be said about the Random House Building. A beautiful building, but is drowned in the density of the city.

That's the same thing. On the other hand, the Hearst Tower, while visible from the west, doesn't really break the skyline either. But it stands out a lot more because its not surrounded by towers. It would likely do so on 6th Ave regardless...

I think that that part of sixth avenue is the most significant highrise canyon to date (outside hong kong). It's so baron and the buildings so big. It's epic in it's own way. It's utter urbanity.

The Hearst Tower has become quite a landmark tower despite it not being that tall, it seems.

Awsome pics! I love the 6th Avenue Canyon.

Yes the Americas Tower, at 50 Floors is isnt very noticable in the skyline, yet up close it is a post-modern jewel.

There are so many other New York Buildings like this! We should have thread dedicated to them. (Very nice buildings, but few notice they exist)

That's true. I'm trying to explore some of Manhattan's many canyons to highlight some of these hidden treasures.

The Hilton hotel in #10 is out of place. It's due back in Las Vegas.

As a HK forumer, I have to say the 6th avenue blows HK away in any given day

I hope you're close enough to get a view down the canyon. A perspective from up there would be nice.

Wonderful theme for a thread. I love skyscraper canyons, esp. those in Hong Kong and in the financial district of NYC.
