No doubt Chicago is famous the world over. It has one of greatest and most recognizable skylines in the world. And I’m sure that many would recognize the Sears tower in a picture since it was the tallest for so long. But I think Chicagoans give too much importance to the Hancock Tower. I don’t think 70% of average America outside of Chicago could name it (and I think my estimates low) and it is almost unrecognizable in the rest of the world outside of the “architectural set”. When it does show up on a list that I think is questionable, inevitable it was posted by a Chicagoan. (which I don’t blame anybody, everyone from every city does it)

You asked and I’m just sharing my opinion.

But I would put Sear’s Tower on my list.

For western Canada, I would say the Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau lake Louise, and Canada Place in Vancouver are pretty well recognized structures.

Dac – I think you did a really great job putting a list together of 25. I’m from the L.A. area, and while I would keep the Hollywood Sign on the list, I don’t think the US Bank Tower qualifies as a symbol of America. I think we need to replace that one. I would add the Chinese Theater before I would add the US Bank Tower, but I’m not sure even that would make the list. Maybe the US Supreme Court House?

The capitol and white house are obvious, so there is no point putting them on. And the trade centers are destroyed, why are they on there??

In reference to another poster who stated he'd be surprised if 70% of Americans could name the Hancock Tower, he was absolutely wrong. I would be shocked--SHOCKED--if 10% of Americans could name Hancock. Probably much closer to 5%. Maybe 15% would recognize it as part of the Chicago skyline. Extrapolateng these numbers to the rest of the world leave Hancock off the top 50 list, let alone the top 10. Sears is more famous for having been the tallest so long, but still nowhere remotely close to Lady Liberty or the White House. Probably top 20.

I said that. For clarification, I said 70% could NOT name it (so 30% could) and I was being generous. I would not dispute your estimates, as they are most likely more accurate.

hahaha Are you kidding?? For all their pretensions to worldliness, east coasters -- God love them -- are some of the most parochial people in the country, but more from arrogance and self-importance than actual stupidity. My own German friends (I guess everyone needs a few??) and European professors are also much more familiar with Chicago architecture than the average American, certainly the average east coaster. I guess it shouldn't be too surprising about Germans, though. Especially when it comes to architecture they seem to be a pretty savvy bunch.

what the fuck? the nyse is extremely non-recognizable. it blends in with every other neo-classical p.o.s ever built. just because it's the stock exchange, doesn't mean people know what it looks like...

without looking up a picture of it, do you know what the tokyo stock exchange looks like?
come on dude...
