I'm definitely NOT bullish on any theme park ever opening there again (at least in the next 10 years). Just seems extremely unlikely to me, I know folks here claim it was profitable pre-K but I don't believe it. At least not significantly profitable. If that was the case, it would've been re-opened by now. Didn't Six Flags want to kill the park pre-K anyways?

It was profitable and I do think something could work there. It just has to be geared to the right person. ALso, Six Flags didnt reopen because the city was still recovering and they were in bankruptcy. I suppose they could try to reopen but the trend in theme parks these days is away from the Six Flags model and more towards a younger oriented theme park. Appealing to teenagers isnt good for business for many reasons!

I guess. Why has it been nine years and there hasn't been a real proposal (i.e. no fly by night companies with no $$) to re-open it? I hope you are right, though.

Orleans Parish Permits

A few interesting ones this week from City Biz:

Orleans Parish
TOP COMMERCIAL PERMITS
$25 million, 580 St. Roch Ave., Orleans Parish School Board
$18 million, 5624 Freret St., Lusher Charter School
$12 million, 3701 Bienville Ave., Carrolton 500 Investors
$4 million, 2832 Burdette St., Chateau Du Notre Dame
$3 million, 833 Howard Ave., Howard Real Estate
$2 million, 909 S. Jefferson Davis Parkway, Xavier University
$1 million, 224 Chartres St., 224 Chartres LLC
$1 million, 2900 Peoples Ave., Carrolton 500 Investors
$800,000, 1050 Annunciation St.
$750,000, 2900 S. Claiborne Ave., Petsmart

Looks like the triangle building on Howard ave is moving forward. Also the Petsmart at 2900 S. Claiborne is part of the Magnolia Marketplace. Seems a little early for a tenant buid-out.

Anyone know what is going on at 1050 Annunciation?

Potentially great news about the loews state theater on canal street. I called the number on the " for sale " sign to get details and the agent said the it was already under contract. I asked how long was the contract period , and the agent said that the person just got the contract period extended to September because he/she is waiting to get a grant approval. I also asked what they were planning on doing with the state palace and the agent said whoever bought it had to keep it as a theater. The agent said that as far as he knows they will be trying to do a mix of Saenger and a movie theater. I wish I remembered to ask what would happen to the current tenants. I hope it goes through and that is a huge success. That would definitely clean up and improve that entire block.

Nickapedia I posted the plans for 1050 annunciation on here a few weeks ago. Apartments and ground floor retail.

JJkannan great news to hear about the state palace. That will be a big final puzzle in starting to get upper and mid canal into attractive places.

Mayor Landrieu Announces Fresh Food Retailer Initiative Loan Award to Jack and Jakes in Central City Neighborhood

JUNE 04, 2014
NEW ORLEANS, LA-- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, in partnership with The Food Trust and Hope Enterprise Corporation (HOPE), announced a funding award to Jack and Jake’s, Inc. as part of the New Orleans Fresh Food Retailer Initiative (FFRI). The $1 million loan, up to half of which may be forgiven, will allow the grocer to open and operate a 23,000 square foot grocery store in the former Myrtle Banks Elementary School on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, creating 33 new full-time jobs and 35 part-time jobs in the Central City community. The proceeds of the loan will be used to complete leasehold improvements, purchase furniture, fixtures and equipment and provide working capital.

“New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods, driven strongly by those that live and work in those communities. The Fresh Food Retailer Initiative allows us to increase access to fresh food options for our citizens in neighborhoods that need it most,” said Mayor Landrieu. “Jack and Jake's is giving citizens the convenience of shopping in their own neighborhood and creating new permanent jobs.”

"This is a great day in Central City,” said Councilmember LaToya Cantrell. "Jack and Jake’s will not only bring fresh produce to our residents who often don't have access to fresh food, but it will also bring much-needed jobs. This award shows the great potential of strategic public/private partnerships.

City Council has given their unanimous around-the-world-and-back-snap to Krystal Burger, the tiny-burger-emporium planning to open this fall on S. Claiborne between Earhart and Napoleon. The $1.1 million renovation will take over a vacant, former KFC location, and reportedly "create more than 45 part-time jobs and six permanent jobs" with plans for more local Krystal Burgers on the way. R Bar Team Takes Over Legendary Bywater Dive Bud Rips

R Bar owners Bailey Smith and Greg Dulli have taken over legendary Bywater dive Bud Rips, the Times-Pic reports this week, with hopes of attracting an array of new denizens from YURPs to service industry. The duo plan to upgrade the beer selection, and add in a weekly crawfish boil and shot-and-a-haircut night a la R Bar, but no major renovations to the building are planned— however, the bar apparently houses an unused oyster bar and a barber shop in the back. Also on tap: the type of killer jukebox you'd expect from the lead guitarist of The Morning 40 Federation and the frontman of the Afghan Whigs.

Mission Chinese Vet To Bring Red's Chinese To St. Claude

A Mission Chinese Food alum plans to open a new restaurant Red's Chinese at 3048 St. Claude Avenue in July, Todd Price reports. The building is next door to the Spellcaster, and at one point housed the Green Burrito.

Sarah Baird on the food menu at Bywater newcomer Bar Redux, now open in the former Joint space (801 Poland Ave): "The menu is small but growing, with a number of quirky twists on comfort food staples from chef Kevin Querant including a ribeye cheesesteak and a Cuban sandwich anchored by garlic infused roasted pork. The Jamaican jerk cheesesteak nachos (off-menu for now, but always available) have become a popular dish for late night bar patrons," and there's vegetarian options too. [Gambit]

Waffle, Croque Hub Café 821 Opens Monday in The CBD

Café 821, opening Monday (June 2) at 821 Baronne Street in the CBD, will be serving the standard coffee shop/cafe fare along with waffles, Croque-Monsieur, and Croque-Madame right down the block from the downtown Rouses Supermarket.

Holy Mole! Del Fuego Taqueria Likely Opening Next Week

Del Fuego Taqueria owner/chef David Wright tells Eater the highly-anticipated restaurant should have their liquor license on Monday, and will then be ready for a soft opening next week on Wednesday and Thursday followed by an official opening on Friday or Saturday.

Below is a summary of key legislative victories that were part of the City’s agenda.

POLICE AND FIRE MILLAGE (HB 111, Rep. Leger)
Public safety is the Administration’s top priority, and the measure will help put more police officers on the street. Passage of this bill allows the people of this state to vote on a constitutional amendment that will give the New Orleans City Council the authority to put before the voters of this city an additional ad valorem tax for fire protection and police protection, each not to exceed an additional five mills. This November, this constitutional amendment would need to pass statewide and in Orleans Parish in order to move forward.

STREAMLINING COURTS (SB 445, Sen. Crowe)

Mayor Landrieu worked in partnership with Orleans Delegation on the streamlining of the City’s court systems. Senate Bill 445 provides for the elimination of two judges from the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court through retirement, resignation or attrition. By right sizing the court, the City General Fund can save $1.12 million per year and $2.15 million will be saved in additional capital costs. The goal of streamlining is to save taxpayer money that can be reinvested in juvenile services.

CASINO SUPPORT SERVICES (ACT 167, Rep. Leger)
The City was able to establish a stable and sustainable method to receive its legally obligated reimbursement from the State for the direct and indirect expenses it incurs to support Harrah’s Casino, including fire, police, EMS, and sanitation. This legislation has been signed into law by the Governor and provides a long term, sustainable means for the State to honor its obligation so the City no longer has to haggle each year for this reimbursement in the State budget. Under the bill, the City recommends dedicating this $3.6 million appropriation to public safety.

REORGANIZING NOPD RESOURCES (HB 940, Rep. Neil Abramson)
Currently, NOPD Quality of Life officers issue summonses for sanitation and public nuisance violations. This bill changes State law to allow the City Council to adopt an ordinance listing what offenses are subject to administrative fines paid to the City and would give Code Enforcement and/or Downtown Development District Sanitation Rangers the authority to issue the citations. This allows NOPD officers to focus on more serious issues.

FIREFIGHTER PENSION REFORM (HB 94, Rep. Leger)
In 2013, the State Legislature passed modest reforms to the Firefighter Pension Board. While the reforms are a step in the right direction, there was more work to be done. This year, the City and the Firefighter Pension Board worked in partnership with New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund to pass this bill, which raises the minimum retirement age from 50 to 52 for new hires (hired after January 1, 2015).

STRENGTHENING BLIGHT POLICY (HB 339, Rep. Leger)
Earlier this year, Mayor Landrieu proposed and the City Council approved revisions to the City Code to strengthen the City’s enforcement capabilities on nuisance, overgrown lots and to accelerate the abatement process. Building on these revisions, this bill aligns State and City law in order to continue the momentum of Mayor Landrieu’s on-going and aggressive commitment to reducing blight throughout the city.

CAPITAL OUTLAY PROJECTS
This year, the City had several successful capital outlay priorities including funding for a new state-of-the-art fire station that combines Engines 33 and 40 in Algiers; funding for major upgrades to the current New Orleans Police Department Fourth District Police Station in Algiers,; funding for the addition of a pool complex to the gymnasium and sports fields at the Rosenwald Center in Central City; funding for the restoration of Richard Lee Playground in the Lower Ninth Ward and $3.5 million for Louis Armstrong International Airport's new interchange feasibility and planning.

Vanilla Sky Café Plans Call For French Quarter Pier, Air Balloon

There's never a shortage of potential projects to rile up the citizens of this fair city, so why not add another one to the mix? Presenting Olexandr Konotopov's riverfront proposal for Vanilla Sky Café— a pier that would be built between the Steam Boat Natchez dock and the Governor Nicholls wharf with, but of course, an anchored helium air balloon that would take passengers 500-feet up in the sky.

Action Report: Marie Laveau tomb restoration plan

NEW ORLEANS -- Tourists are endlessly fascinated by New Orleans cemeteries, especially the tomb where voodoo priestess Marie Laveau is supposedly buried.
"It's the first time we've been to New Orleans, so this culture is new to us, and we've learned a lot already. And it's pretty interesting," said Jeff Robins of Chicago

What is the building?

What is the building project at 3701 Bienville Ave., $12 million, Carrolton 500 Investors?

I've looked online, but can't find much.

When I lived in New Orleans, I used to work in that area.

Good question... that's Katie's (Restaurant). Looks like the company owns a bunch of second-rate strip malls, sites for Wal-Marts and Home Depots, etc.

Kirschman Gets City Approval For Demolition of Old Frank’s Steakhouse on Freret

The City of New Orleans’ Neighborhood Conservation District committee has granted a local businessman permission to demolish the former Frank’s Steak House, located on Freret Street.

Arnold Kirschman, whose family had operated furniture stores in New Orleans for almost a century, will be redeveloping the site at the corner of Freret and Cadiz, the largest remaining undeveloped parcel along Freret Street.

The site consists of several parcels, including the old Frank’s Steak House, in addition to a building located at the corner of Cadiz and Freret Street, which once housed a laundry. The Cadiz Street building will remain and be renovated.

$1.7 million to be dedicated to streetlight bulb replacement in New Orleans

Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration has identified $1.7 million that, paired with a larger grant from Entergy New Orleans, will get nearly all of the city's streetlights functioning for the first time in years.

The $1.7 million comes from a small property tax millage dedicated to infrastructure and capital projects, said Andy Kopplin, the mayor's chief administrative officer, at a Wednesday (June 4) meeting of the City Council's Budget Committee. The revenue had been steered to debt service, he said, but those liabilities are winding down, freeing up the extra cash.

The mayor would like to see it dedicated to replacing failed streetlights around the city.

Combined with a one-time $14.6 million infusion from the power company that the council voted to dedicate to replacing old-style bulbs with modern LEDs, the city will be in a position to have all of its lights replaced, Kopplin said.

Great news and im really liking the trend of these new smaller airlines coming into the airline industry. Im not a fan of the hub and spoke model we have had for the past two decades as it allows for massive delays and decreases direct access to other cities. good news all the way around!

Johnny Sanchez Will Take Over Ste. Marie Spot This Fall

Chef John Besh and BFF/Chopped host/chef Aaron Sanchez are opening a New Orleans location of their casual taqueria Johnny Sanchez in the former Ste. Marie space (930 Poydras) this fall. Todd A. Price reports: "Johnny Sánchez will marry Sánchez's deep knowledge of Mexican cooking with Besh's focus on using high-quality local ingredredients." First comes marriage. Then comes baby in the form of "tacos, tostadas and ceviches, along with a few larger plates." Fear not, ballers, there will also be "dishes with more exotic ingredients" at a higher price point. The first location of Johnny Sanchez opens in Baltimore in August.

Kenner hotels planned near site of new airport terminal

When officials proposed a new passenger terminal on the north side of Louis Armstrong International Airport, they expressed hope of drawing more jetsetters -- and more businesses catering to those travelers. That promise is already panning out, if three new hotels proposed in Kenner are any indication.

Not sure if this has been posted before or not but Royal Caribbean is pulling out of NO again after next season. I'm surprised they couldn't make it work. It seems like Carnival reigns supreme in the local cruise market. NCL seems to be hanging in there as well.
