North End:boston

This represents a Sunday afternoon in the North End. You are probably aware that the North End is known as Boston's Italian neighborhood. And famous for it's colonial history, settled in the early 1600s. It was not my intention to create an overtly religious thread, but we unexpectedly ran into a Padre Pio celebration that was roaming around the neighborhood. For those that saw my Gloucester thread, Padre Pio made an appearance there as well.

This is part of the Rose Kennedy Greenway, which is a park that covers the big dig. This portion of the park acts as a front porch to the North End. After getting off the T at the Haymarket Station, you cross this park to reach the North End.

now that's some serious urbanity, with healthy pedestrian traffic to boot. and though i've never been to boston, as somebody from california, i am always surprised at how white boston seems compared to other big cities. you just don't see whites in those kinds of numbers out here (in the big cities). that said, keep the great threads coming! with each thread, your progress is more and more visible!

^It's like my shock after seeing "The Departed": They still have poor inner city whites in Boston? Damn...

Thank you very much for this thread about North End, Expat!

I remember perfectly this wonderful Boston´s Little Italy. We liked it very much. Paul Revere´s House and Old North Church are beautiful landmarks. We visited both places, and we got surprised for its beauty. We liked its italian taste, with so many restaurants.

This is a beautiful historic neighbourhood of Boston, and we enjoyed our visit there last January, though it was very cold, but we like cold too.

Waiting for your next tour...

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Poor, not so much. Working class? Definitely. Don't let the picturesque grittiness of the North End fool you, it is not inexpensive.

lol to this comment. i kind of get what your saying but it may be so for this neighborhood but not the city as a whole. the city's neighborhoods are all like that. different ethnic groups inhabited different sections of the city and as the demographic changed the ethnic groups identifed themselves with a certain neighborhood and still for the most part that same thing exists today, for better or worse

lol again as someone commented, this is by no stretch a poor neighborhood in fact one of the most desireable in the city in which to live

i somewhat agree with working class to a degree but it is now younger professionals with money that live here and the old North End natives are sadly almost gone or are few in number, i know, a lot of my family is from here. it WAS blue collar, not so much any more and it was NEVER what you would call a poor inner city neighborhood

Expat, this is the best yet of your threads for me due to my personal attachment to the North End. I spent so much time here as a kid and also as a young adult because of my family living here. My daughters know it like the back of their hand as i also took them in many times as well. Heck, you took pictures of where 2 of my aunts lived on Salem Street. I have so many fond memories that you brought back to me that it is hard to put them all in words and i'd most likey bore you to death. one of my aunts lived directly across from the Old North Chruch , first floor and we would watch the feasts go by from her bedroom window, sigh! I had many goose bump moments looking at these and many times was filled with emotion. I do still to this day visit 3-4 times a year ,in fact, funny this is here today, i am taking my aunt that used to live on salem st (was forced out by condos years ago) in on saturday and she is dying for a regina pizza. I hope to write more later , thank you so much for posting this, truly your best yet but this is an area that is incredibly photogenic so you had a lot of material and as usual, you did a stunning job!

Boston is a majority-minority city with numerous distinct, ethnic, religious, racial neighborhoods.

Fuck. Me. The North End is my favorite part of downtown by far. Thanks for another awesome thread Expat! Boston had been so underrepresented on this forum until you came along.

Great looking place and lively!

The Rose Kennedy Greenway with its open space nicely balances the tight urbanity of the North End.

with the density of Downtown but it has it's detractors . what we got there was nothing compared to what was supposed to happen but, it's Boston and that's the way it goes. i suppose its better than an ugly elevated expressway but too much concrete and stone and not nearly enough grass and trees
