As much as I hate to say it I feel like the writing is on the wall for this league...can they really survive with no media attention and less than 2000 attendance average??

The Atlantic teams are solid, as is London ON. The big question as to the future of the league is increasing the interest in central Canada. This is crucial to league survival. If a nucleus of 4-6 successful teams in central Canada can be developed then the league will survive. If not.......

It is still too early to write the obit for the NBL. Give it another couple of years yet.

The best thing about basketball, from an "establishing a league" point of view, is that it is a low cost sport. Rosters are small compared to football and hockey which means you are operating at a low cost because of fewer salaries and can survive on lower attendance. That allows markets like Moncton and Saint John to get in, places that would otherwise be written of as too small (I know Moncton is in the running for CFL, but that's a little different). It also alleviates the pressure of being a start-up. You know that attendance will be low at the start, and if a team can meet payroll with few fans in the building, it stands a chance of being able to create a niche in its market.

The other thing is that, much like football, there is the big American Pro league (NBA) and nothing else. There are terrific leagues in Europe, but there is nothing in Canada, except for one team in Toronto. A Canadian league, if it can catch on could become a place where players who have slipped off the radar in the NBA can come and regain form and/or have a 2nd career, without leaving North America.

Some controversy over the Ottawa team's name.. Frankly, I think it's much ado about nothing. Though I think the name should be changed because raNdOm cApiTalS in words is annoying.

I think the more concerning thing is that they're going to play out of the Scotiabank Place. With the crowds the NBL is pulling, they're really going to rattle around in there; and being out in Kanata may hurt their drawing power.

(Then again, I wonder if they could set up a literal crosstown rivalry, and set a second team in Gatineau or out in Orleans? )

I personally don't think that it was necessary to change the new Ottawa team's name from TomaHawks. I can't imagine how this is really considered an insult to native Americans, but whatever.....

On the brighter side, the NBL (Canada) is finally getting national media exposure. This story is currently on the front page of CBC.ca and they have an attached poll where nearly 5,000 people have already voted.

The Moncton Miracles blew out the Montreal Jazz today by a score of 135-87 to finish the regular season with a team record five game winning streak, and a 20-20 season record for a .500 wiinning percentage.

Devin Sweetney would break 4 records in the fourth quarter. He would score his 1,000th point and be the only player in the league to ever get this achievement in one season. Sweetney would also break the scoring record for one game dropping 56 points, which was previously held by Jazz’s Eric Frederick with 47 points. He also broke the record for most 3’s in a game with 10 as well as most 3’s in a season with 114.

Now the Miracles can do nothing else but wait for the other teams to finish the season. They have at least even odds of being in the playoffs. If they are not successful, at least they did everything they could to make it happen....

 Remaining Games

·      Tuesday, March 12th
Halifax Rainmen vs London Lightning

·      Wednesday, March 13th
Oshawa Power vs Saint John Mill Rats

·      Thursday, March 14th
Summerside Storm vs London Lightning

·      Friday, March 15th
Windsor Express vs Saint John Mill Rats

·      Saturday, March 16th
Windsor Express vs Oshawa Power
Summerside Storm vs Halifax Rainmen

·      The Lightning and Storm have secured the number 1 and 2 spots for playoffs, the other 3 spots are still up in the air
·      For Halifax to secure a spot in the playoffs and finish ahead of Moncton they need to win their last two games, which are against London and Summerside. If the Rainmen lose tonight they cannot finish ahead of the Miracles as the Miracles hold the tiebreaker and Moncton will secure a playoff spot!
·      Saint John holds the tiebreaker against Moncton so if they only win one of their last two games they will finish a spot ahead. They would have to lose both of their upcoming games to finish behind the Miracles.
·      Windsor is currently on a 5 game win streak only needs to win one of their last two games to finish ahead of Moncton as Moncton holds the tiebreaker.
·      Oshawa, is on a 7 game losing streak and would have to win both of their games and have Saint John and Halifax lose both of their games to have any hope to get back in the race.

This is from the Moncton Miracles newsletter. In essence, the Rainmen are at the greatest peril of missing the playoffs. They need to win their last two games of the season against the two best teams in the league in order to qualify. If they lose just a single game, then the Miracles will advance to the playoffs.

Sounds like this league will be moving to a summer schedule. Makes sense as you can't play basketball outside in canada in the winter. The Halifax Windjammers were in a summer league as the article states, and did well attendance wise.

NBL exploring summer league

March 11, 2013 - 11:00pm BY BRIAN FREEMAN SPORTS REPORTER

National Basketball League of Canada teams are putting out feelers to determine if they should try to dribble around their competition with major junior hockey for the almighty entertainment dollar.

In a survey sent to season ticket holders, the Halifax Rainmen and several other NBL clubs are asking — among other questions — whether fans would support a switch to a summer schedule.

The two-year-old league’s season now runs from November into early April. But that condemns the NBL to playing second fiddle to hockey in Canadian winter sports markets.

Interesting idea........

At least as far as Moncton is concerned, it could be a real pain having the NBL playoffs coinciding with the Q League playoffs. It's damn difficult as it is getting the Wildcats playoff times organized at the Coliseum with all the trade shows booked at the facility, let alone throwing the NBL playoffs into the mix as well!!

Yet another reason why we need a new downtown events centre in Moncton....

But a summer schedule would result in the NBL playing second fiddle to... you know... summer.

I won't pay to watch indoor sports on a nice day. Give me something non-hockey to do in the winter.

London Lightning defeated Halifax Rainmen tonight by a score of 103-87.

As a result, the Moncton Miracles have officially made the NBL playoffs!!!

I think everyone had written the Miracles off three weeks ago when they had a 15-20 record. A five game winning streak at seasons end, and a little luck made the difference though.....

While I think the idea of a "summer league" is interesting, I tend to agree with Clayton Park. Our summertimes are so precious to us here in the great white north, I think it would be a strategic error to alter the league schedule that drastically. Perhaps the season could start a little earlier in the fall, say late September, so that the NBL and QMJHL playoff schedules don't overlap......

The Saint John Mill rats knocked off Oshawa tonight to clinch the 4th playoff spot. The five playoff spots are now finalized and the only change would be if Saint John passes Windsor for third.

The Moncton Miracles won their first ever playoff game tonight by beating the Saint John Mill Rats 98-90. They now lead the best of three elimination round 1-0.

Action now switches to Harbour Station for games two and three. It will be a tough slog for the Miracles. They have never won a game in Harbour Station, but the Mill Rats now have their backs against the wall. It will be interesting to see how this all transpires.....

The Moncton Miracles are still alive in the NBL semi finals.

They defeated the league leading London Lightning tonight at the coliseum by a score of 114-103, to remain alive in the best of five series. The Lightning now lead two games to one.

Game four is tomorrow night, again at the coliseum. I think I will be going to this one!!

The Miracles fell to the London Lightning tonight by a score of 104-98, ending their playoff run by losing three games to one in the semi finals.

The first quarter would be very close, but the Lightning showed their power in the second quarter and would have a 20 point lead by the mid portion of the thrid quarter. The Miracles would then fight back and tied the game with about 4 minutes remaining. The Lightning would only be ahead 99-98 with about 90 seconds remaining. They held on to win, with their remaining points scored on free throws on intentional fouls.

A disappointing result, but the Miracles showed considerable spunk, and I don't think anyone would consider this anything but a very entertaining and successful year for the team.

Attendance both last night and tonight approached 3,000, and the crowd was louder than at most Wildcats games......

New expansion team in Brampton

http://www.mississauga.com/sports/ar...d-for-brampton

Quote:
The new Brampton entry will be known as the A’s and will don a red and black jersey in their inaugural season.

According to David Magley, who will act as the team’s general manager and head coach, NBL Canada has rubber stamped the Brampton franchise to begin play this fall bringing the total number of teams to 10 for the 2013-2014 season.

They still need to finalize a lease agreement with the Powerade Centre, which according to Magley is almost complete.

“We did our due diligence and feel the demographics in Brampton is perfect for basketball,” said Magley. “We don’t have to educate the public.”
