^ Technically EVERY picture that we have seen were before the attacks, but if you mean just just before (a month or two), I get you.

This one is even closer to the time of impact. I don't remember where this is from, but this was taken the morning of 9/11.

And the exif data for the photo. Note the time. 24 minutes before Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower.

There is some strange, eerie peacefulness to that picture. To know that within a half-an hour things would be so, so much different.

The calmness of the water, and the perfectly clear sky, and the beautiful September morning in general is such a massive contrast to the horrible events later on, that it almost seems artistic.

When Diner’s Club (the first consumer charge card) put together this ad in 1979, its choice of Windows on the World was no accident. Opened in 1976, the eatery was, even in the haughty view of New York magazine, “the most spectacular restaurant in the world.” Windows served its mignonettes of veal with crayfish sauce at 1,310 feet up. Its views were as staggering as its prices ($16.50 prix fixe—that’s $69 now, sans wine and tip). For VIPs, there were valets and even masseurs; for everyone else, a reservation wait that stretched for months.

It's photos like this that really remind me how great and dominant on the skyline the twins were.

I always wanted to do the same thing too. At least time travel to warn the pilots on the four planes that there were hijackers aboard.

Beautiful picture! This was probably the last picture every taken of the WTC. On top of the picture being so calm looking if the person would have stayed there he or she would have had views of both planes crashing into the towers. I hope they left in time not to see that. They would have seen both planes coming long before they actually hit. I can only imaging how they would have felt if they saw that, especially the first one, and not being able to do nothing but watch in horror.

I like to think of that photo as "the last picture of a sane world." Because it was never really the same after that.

And Hunser, fantastic photos. The most famous, iconic skyline of the late 20th century. Maybe ever.

I agreed. It wasn't until 9/11 that the 21st century ceased to be a continuation of the late 20th century and started to become something more different.

For me, it was the most iconic skyline in history, until the twin towers were stolen from it. When I was young, I would see a picture of the twin towers and instantly recognize New York. I wouldn't know which city it was if they showed just the Empire State Building.

^^ Exactly. Many new problems in society today are linked in one way or another to 9/11.

Minoru Yamasaki and his staff with their model of the World Trade Center, 1971. I believe this is the same model housed at the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park. Photo by Joe Vaccaro. Originally found here

If you look carefully, you can see a model skyscraper on the plot where 7WTC would normally be. Maybe a never built skyscraper for that site?
