The Age of the Supertall

when i was born in 1976, there was a grand total of 7 supertalls in the world.

when i turned 10 in 1986, a further 1 was built for a total of 8 supertalls in the world.

when i turned 20 in 1996, a further 7 were built for a total of 15 supertalls in the world.

when i turned 30 in 2006, a further 12 were built for a total of 25 supertalls in the world (we also tragicaly lost the WTC twins).

when i turneded 40 this year, a further 64 supertalls were built with 126 more under construction for a total of 215 supertalls in the world!

from 7 to 8 to 15 to 25 to 215!

holy shit!

It seems like Steely's age is the source of super tall glory. In other words, may you live to 110 yrs so that there can be 1000's of them. Economics don't dictate super talls, Steely Dan's age does. That's the missing piece in the economic books right there.

Now... where's my nobel prize for discovering this...

25 years hence, will somebody start a thread about the progressive growth of ultra-talls? Doesn't that 1 km-high behemoth being built in Jeddah qualify?

I believe China is responsible for much of the super tall growth. You could say Dubai is an outlier, but most of the 300m + towers rising are in China. Many of the 600m+ towers rising are in China along with proposals. NYC leads in the Western Hemisphere right now for super talls u/c and complete. NY is also on a fast track to eclipse Dubai if it keeps it up in the 300m category (completed).

LOL!

it just blows me away that i was born into a world where supertalls were extremely rare and only existed in two cities on the entire planet (NYC & Chicago). and now, 4 decades later we are seeing an absolute explosion of supertalls in cities all over the globe. in the next 10 years there will probably be over a thousand of them, with some cities having dozens of supertalls, perhaps there will even be one or two cities that amass 100 supertalls by then. this was all unthinkable 20 short years ago.

it's crazy.

Took some data from the CTBUH. So its the 100 tallest towers right now, and the 100 future tallest towers. Note that it only goes up to 1300+ for future tallest/proposed. Lots more from 1000-1299 ft.

Cropped from CTBUH pdf's

What's crazy is that I once had a notion that I could see all the 800' towers in the world in person (used to be extremely rare for a city to have one or more). When the millennium turned I had seen 39/68 of them. I have in the 15 years since seen another 46 of them. Except that there are now 378 and many more under construction. I don't think I will make it.

Maybe I should just stick to supertalls.

^ yeah, you'll never keep up. china alone would be impossible to keep up with.

when the millenium turned in 2000, china had a grand total of 11 towers that stood taller than 800'

today china has 162 of them, with another 159 currently under construction for a total of 321 800+ footers!

hell, just in the US, there were 38 800+ footers in the year 2000.

today there are 54 of them, with with another 21 currently under construction for a total of 75 800+ footers.

all stat above taken from the SSP diagrams.

There are only 6 cities that have been members of the supertall club long enough to drink, NYC, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Pyongyang, if you want to count that.
