Is there a Consulate or Mission in your city?

A consulate (or mission) is normally a 'branch office' to a country's embassy.

The usual reasons a country might keep a consulate within a particular city include:
  • There may be a number of companies (based in a specific country) with local offices or facilities.
  • There may be a lot of official business being conducted locally, on behalf of that country.
  • There may be a lot of expatriates from a certain country living in the city.
  • The region may attract a lot of tourists or visitors from a particular country.
If you can think of a reason why that particular consulate is in your city, please provide it.

National capitals and regions are excluded from this thread, since they almost always host embassies. However, there are exceptions, and occasionally a country's embassy may be located elsewhere.

If your city isn't a capital but hosts an embassy, by all means list it.

Looks like we have 37 in the Seattle area. Of those 5 (Mexico, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Russia) appear to be official, the rest appear to be consular agencies (whatever that means) or honorary (people who want the special "park anywhere" plates, I imagine).

The five with official consulates makes sense to me based on our trading partners.

Finland's, Italy's and Ukraine's consulates are wandering around town somewhere... Actually I think the Finland one may be the official embassy.

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Home to the most Fins outside of Finland, and about 30% of the city is owned by Italians.

As a neutral country thru both World Wars and the Cold War, we've got plenty. Only pass by two every day tho; the embassies of the Philipines and Angola.

Kamakura, nothing. But I'm right next to Yokohama, Japan's 2nd largest city, which has....

Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea

Yokohama is right next to Tokyo, so pretty much everything is there. Why would Yokohama have a consulate-general for South Korea? The largest foreign population in Japan is Korean, and I guess there are a lot of Koreans around here.

The Phoenix area has ...

Consulate of Sweden ... 1 Renaissance Square, downtown
Consulate of Cyprus ... 12th St and Missouri
Consulate General of Mexico ... 19th Avenue and Camelback
Consulate of Germany ... 10th St and Missouri
General Consulate of Honduras ... 40th St and McDowell
Consulate of Guatemala ... 7th St and Highland
Consulate of the Netherlands ... 20th St and Highland, and 3 more in Scottsdale ?
Canadian Consulate ... 24th St and Camelback
Consulate General of Norway ... 23rd Ave and Peoria
Honorary Vice Consulate of Italy ... 12th St and Missouri

Consulate General of Switzerland ... Scottsdale Rd and Osborn, Scottsdale
Royal Danish Consulate ... 94th St and Raintree, Scottsdale

Consulate of Finland, 99th Avenue and Bell, Sun City (wtf?)

Only one downtown, the rest generally clustered in the Biltmore/Squaw Peak area, rather high-dollar areas. The Honduras consulate is in a sketchy office building north of the airport, the Mexican consulate is right next to Phoenix's densest (15,000 people per square mile) and one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods.

Good list. You can add a few more for Phoenix:

Consulate for the United Kingdom, in Glendale
Consulate for Costa Rica, in Scottsdale
Consulate for Ecuador, in Tempe
Honorary Consulate for El Salvador, in Paradise Valley
Honorary Consulate for Iceland, in Paradise Valley
Honorary Consulate for Peru, in Mesa

I'm surprised Phoenix doesn't have more of these. France would be an obvious one, for tourist reasons. Brazil should have one as well, given the 'seemingly' large population residing here. I also can't believe that China and Japan don't have consulates here as well, given that they are large trading partners.
