When I was a kid, the Tilt-A-Whirl was always my favorite ride. Happily, working examples still operate at the Redondo Beach and Santa Cruz piers.

The Tilt-A-Whirl at Redondo Beach (above) has a great paint job. (the one at Indiana Beach, that I mentioned earlier, is white and purple. )

Great to hear from you David!

Thanks Earl.

detail of photo originally posted by HossC

I wonder if the shorter guy in the white suit with the oranges on his lapels was sort of a 'mascot'? (for lack of a better word)

I first noticed him in my photo, and wondered what he had around his neck. -now I know!

GW said "Now I'm thinking that the tower belongs to a large model of Wrigley Field" in post #19354 - a good guess considering the much lower resolution of the image.

Here's an enlargement of the tower from e_r's link. I think the sign on the truck's door says "WRIGLEY FIELD" "BASEBALL PARK".

I posted this detail view of the clock in reply to GW's post.

The Tilt-A-Whirl was always a favorite! Now i'm recalling the names of other rides like that I remember: The Whip, The Paratrooper, The Octopus, Dive Bomber, Scrambler...

Hoss, I may have noticed the oranges on the man's lapels, but I didn't realize the mock-tower was in the back of a truck!
I thought it was further away, towards the parking lot. Thanks for the clarification.

note the man sitting on the ground behind the car. (I hadn't noticed him either)

This is the Southeast District Health Center, as photographed by Julius Shulman in 1946. It's "Job 032: Adrian Wilson and Associates, Southeast District Health Center (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1946".

Here's a closer view of the entrance.

Both from Getty Research Institute

The Southeast District Health Center was at 4920 Avalon Boulevard. I say "was" only because it's now the Avalon-Carver Community Center. The location means that Mr Shulman's first picture was taken from the foliage of South Park. It's a shame that they've had to add all of those fences and grilles.

I found the heads!

Yesterday I posted a gsv view of the building that used to be Tony's Nightmare Bar.

Today, while I was driving the google-mobile downtown this second-story window caught my eye.

We've seen this early view before on NLA, but I believe this is the first time it's been tinted by hand.

Betty White was semi-famous long before her more public entrance.
As an ingénue in the 1940s Hollywood she tried all sorts of marketing avenues.

Google Betty White nudes if interested in more views. Noir? I'd say so.

Don't worry, they're very tastefully done.

"Iron bars do not a prison make,"

eBay

....at least not at the new Los Angeles Police Facilities Building.

The architects eliminated the grim, prison-like aspect of the building when they specified perforated Fenestra panels for use as the restraining barriers in the jail section.
The ribbed, sheet steel panels can easily be seen through when looking out of the newly completed building but outsiders can not see into the jail cells. [1955]
________________________________________________

I've never noticed the Fenestra panels before.

Here's the building pretty much dead-center in this aerial.

The aerial is from this 1969 cover (when the facility was renamed the Parker Center)

Added bonus photo:

1958 Chevy Delray patrol cars parked at the Los Angeles Police Facilities Building.

www.policemag.com

Today, Welton Becket's building sits empty. Rumor has it, it's going to be torn down for a 27 story tower.

Yeah, I've heard that. If not her, then who is it???
It's her or her twin sister. The facial features are identical....even the cute dimples.

FWIW, no one else seems to have commented it isn't simply a model of the tower. If you look behind and a bit lower than the cab of the truck, I think you can see it is a model of the entire park. Would have liked to have seen that. Wonder where it ended up.

Good eye M_R. I've been trying to find another photograph of the 'Wrigley Field 'float' in a parade or parked in front of the ballpark, to no avail.
You just know there has to be other photographs (it's so damn cool)

A Before & After that never happened.

lapl

Here's the ballpark enlarged to a total of 60,000 seats, and look at all that additional parking! Destroying the neighborhood feel in one fell swoop.

http://griddle.baseballtoaster.com/archives/922790.html

HossC posted an interesting postcard of the expansion, but it didn't show the massive parking lot.

Otis Criblecoblis commented on the temporary bleachers that were set up in the outfield for special events.

Dunno about the cop, but the car is a 1956 [ish] Austin Healey 100.

Cheers,
