Hallmark in Portage Place has now closed. Its sandwhiched between the vacant former atheles world and vacant former laura sites, both of which have leased signs on them.

Perhaps all three locations are being merged into one. Another office conversion?

fatburger in Canada is franchised by the rickys restaurant chain, i think ricky's is BC based - a lot of the locations in the vancouver area are side by side

the burgers are okay, better than mcdonalds - best draw is you can get beer with your burger

IKEA's area getting active
Neighbours start to open shops

If you were to ask Yogi Berra about the nearly four-month-old IKEA store in south Winnipeg, baseball's most famous quipster would probably say, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

He'd be sure to get an argument -- as well as overwhelming agreement -- from the retailers in the midst of setting up shop in the Seasons of Tuxedo development next door.
Bouclair Home is the first of IKEA's neighbours to throw out the welcome mat. The Montreal-based home furnishings store will have a soft opening on Monday for its first Manitoba location and its grand opening two days later.

Sandra Bracken, Bouclair's vice-president of marketing, said customers at its 8,000-square-foot store will be very similar to IKEA's.

"We're going after the value shopper who loves fashion. Fashion is taking a page from clothing. People want their homes to be fashionable. They do so much entertaining in their homes, they want to feel good there," she said.

Bouclair has experience sharing real estate with the world's biggest furniture maker in both Boucherville, Que., and Coquitlam, B.C.

"There's a lot of growth and development (in south Winnipeg); it's a location that is very conducive (to good business) for a home retailer. We feel Winnipeg is underserved in the home-fashion area at a value price. We felt we needed to be in that area," she said.
Bouclair has more than 115 locations across Canada and will look to expand further in Winnipeg if the right real estate becomes available, Bracken said.

Bouclair Home fizzled in Thunder Bay. It will probably do better in Winnipeg, though.

I can't believe California health standards would allow hamburgers to be made medium rare.

There was a Hallmark in Portage Place?

People still go to Hallmark when you can use a printer or go to any dollar store?

Hell I just use christmas cards and cross out the merry christmas part. I hate cards.

The best part of going to the states is ordering a medium rare burger.

As long as the meat is cut and ground properly there is nothing to worry about.

Yes - but you need to very choosy which establishment said undercooked burger is being ordered.

These burgers aren't being prepared by grinding a steak order every time someone places an order. They are sitting around pre-ground for up to days on end.

Yes, good points. This issue of cooking ground beef / wellness is not a black and white issue. As soon as you grind meat, you increase the surface area exponentially, and your (short) clock starts on when the nasty stuff starts to grow. Based on the quality of meat places like In n Out likely use (grade F horse parts?), I don't think I'd trust anything less than WELL DONE. But that's just me.

Prime Rib, or steaks on the other hand... its medium-rare, or less, or go home!

Not true when it comes to In-N-Out. The reason that the chain has never left California (other than Vegas) is that all of their ingredients are prepared fresh daily in their own plant. All 281 restaurants exist within a days drive of their distribution center.

Regardless. When it comes to e.coli the issue is not freshness but rather if the meat is tainted with e.coli to begin with. Meat quality (along with stringent and regular testing) and facility cleanliness are the real factors at hand. From what I understand they are VERY strict when it comes to selecting their beef producers and will do random spot checks and drop violators at the drop of a hat.

You can bet that if In-N-Out ever suffered an e.coli outbreak that we would have heard about it and they have been around for over 60 years now.

Exactly. That was my point about being choosy with where you order undercooked burgers.

And whether or not the meat comes to a restaurant with E.Coli or not... I would be more concerned with who handles the meat in the actual restaurant (minimum wage labour) versus the sparkling clean industrial plant rendering the cows.

Hamburger is vulnerable at so many different points. At the factory, at the store ... a burger has protein from 100 different sources. Why take the risk?

You want a medium rare burger? Buy a roast and grind it up at home.

I hate eating undercooked meat so the idea of eating undercooked hamburger frightens me.

But I have had food poisoning from hamburger before. Not fun.

Thinly slice off the exterior of the roast first, then grind it. Or cut it into cubes and attack it with two cleavers like the Chinese cooks do. Then it is safe to eat very rare.

I love the Beyond part in one of the 3 new tenants located in the new development but bummed out about Western Financial not picking a DownTown head Office location, the old AirCanada Topic of pulling out of downtown? Whatever...It's New Retail right?
