The erection of the largest building in San Francisco’s history has been a pleasure to watch unfold. It will be the pride of the world’s most accepting city. I would like to give this tower and its neighbor the nick name: The Ambiguously Gray Duo.

The crown work over the last few days extends the structural elements of Salesforce Tower past the 300 meter mark, and San Francisco officially has its first supertall! Congratulations!

I'm thinking that they're installing windows after they put the fins in place. The theory makes sense when you think about the windows without fins at the bottom, kinda like 1 wtc concrete base now that I think about it.

Historical moment indeed for the West Coast. A tower to signify the 21st Century California.

The purpose of the center structure is now quite obvious.

All transbay towers in one rendering (minus the 805 ft parcel F).

Stunning. Futuristic. Like all those Star Trek establishing shots coming to fruition.

Interesting that the complaints about the name of this tower seem to have abated. Is that because more people now understand that Salesforce.com is the premier cloud-based enterprise software-as-a-service player in existence?

I'm just glad we have them in San Francisco and that their 3-building campus seems to mean they are in the city to stay because I believe they will be around even when the latest tech boom crashes and some of the better known consumer-oriented players are history, at least as independent companies (Tweet that!).

My guess is that the vast bulk of San Franciscans have no idea what this means.

Also Salesforce is a pretty good, globally understandable name. Also they're not known as one of the behemoth tech monopolies. Would have been horrible if it was 'Google Tower' or 'Apple Tower'. 'Uber Tower' would actually sound cool but it would be viewed negatively with all the bad PR out of that company.

I still think "salesforce tower" sounds dumb compared to "transbay tower", but I'm used to it by now, and the name isn't changing. I already got all my complaining done, no point in doing it now.

It seems to me that the process of constructing the crown should put the whole crown vs. spire debate to rest. This structure looks to be more intricate than the frame of the building itself. The crown has to be constructed, whereas some of the spires we've seen are assembled out of a handful of pieces or even lifted into place as one unit. There is a huge difference between constructing a massive structure piece-by-piece 1,000 feet up, and attaching something that could probably be placed or removed with a heavy-lift helicopter. The effort and complexity involved in adding these to their respective buildings is nowhere near comparable. A spire could be here today, gone tomorrow or vice versa. The same cannot be said for this crown.
