Excellent photo update as usual, Hunter.

Don't ever think that we don't appreciate your photo contributions. I know I certainly do.

I think we had a TON of projects that sped up in order to beat Measure JJJ and Measure S. Because of that, I expect slim pickings for a little while.

What a terrible design for the station! Can't they stack the escalators side by side and move them much, much closer to corner of 1st and Central? That would allow for a larger uninterrupted ground floor development (can you say retail on top of a transit station??). You would still have limited underground development options, but that isn't really that important, considering this sits right on top of a transit stop.

Speaking about Little Tokyo, it looks like the long talked-about Budokan is finally gonna break ground.

From Urbanize LA:

Little Tokyo's Budokan Scheduled for Summer Groundbreaking

The Budokan of Los Angeles, a longtime goal of many Little Tokyo stakeholders, has passed the 90 percent mark in its fundraising campaign and is scheduled to break ground this summer.

The $25-million project, slated for a City-owned parking lot near the corner of 2nd and Los Angeles Streets, will be a multi-purpose sports and activities center capable of accommodationg martial arts tournaments, performances basketball and volleyball games, senior programs and youth activities. Plans also call for a roof level garden and children's play area.

Updated renderings show that the Budokan has abandoned its previous designs for a modern building clad with yellow-tinged aluminum panels. Instead, the revised plan shows a less ostentatious structure wrapped with wood-like and translucent white materials.

Yeah I have no idea why we design our stations this way. For every other city I've been to station entrances take up a relatively small amount of space and are often incorporated into buildings.

there aren't really any images of the revised design, other than the one posted at urbanizela, or the same image at the beginning of this vid & one other one around 3:30.....

Video Link

^ most of the scenes in that recent vid duplicate a vid from 2 yrs ago. Except the youtuber has inserted more recent images of the revised bldg to replace the previous version still shown at the start of this vid & around 3:30....

this thread sometimes focuses so much on the inanimate....or strictly the design of projs & new devlpt....that the human element is overlooked or pushed into the background.

I love projs that bring more ppl back to dtla...ppl who first started abandoning the center of LA over 30 or 40 yrs ago.

Even more so when that new devlpt involves the replacement of gaps....deadzones....similar to the current parking lot on the west side of LA street south of 2nd. A property that has long been in the shadow of St vibiana's & now the new vibiana loft bldg. Or what until has now been one of those gaps that contributes to giving the hood a sketchy, forlorn look & feel.

Time for change is long overdue & very welcome in finally giving dtla a more complete, active profile.

Budokon moving forward is a really big deal. Very, very happy to see that moving forward.

How true. But is it just me and my ageing eyes, or have the designs in the flow of renderings seem to be somewhat different than the original release--more toned down--less repugnant?

I'm sure that we are all adult enough to truly know the motives of the "Do not block the clock" crowd--you see they are the downtown gentry who are the true pioneers of the early rebirth of downtown Los Angeles (think kind of like those on the Mayflower), and they want their "God Damned" unobstructed view of downtown which they think that they have earned and are entitled to. Incidentally, they especially covet this view from their rooftop pool which they swim in, have sex in, and probably pee in--at their pleasure.
