It looked much better in the 30s, where you could view enough of the building from a distance that its proportions worked. In the present day, it looks rather squat compared to 70 Pine and Woolworth.

Do any pictures of the observatory on 40 Wall exist? I have seen recent pictures of Woolworths observatory, 70 Pines observatory and old pictures of the Chryslers from the early days before it shut down. But I have seen absolutely nothing from 40 Wall. I can understand no historical pictures surviving as very few historical pictures from the other buildings are floating around, But it seems many journalists and photographers are getting access to these "out of bounds" areas in other buildings, has nobody done so for 40 Wall?

Nice video, shame it has no interior shots, but the exterior shots are amazing.

Good to see more of 40 Wall street in general... It is in such an important part of NYC yet it seems the forgotton brother to the more well known Art Deco Super Talls of NYC.

I emailed the Skyscraper Museum in New York yesterday to see if they had any pictures of the observatory and the Director (Carol Willis I believe) said that the building never had an observatory. She mentioned under the spire there being offices and a gentlemens club, But no observatory.

This rather surprised me as I have read on numberous occassions that 40 Wall had an observatory the closed sometime in the 40's and that Severance had argued his building taller because its tallest floor the observatory was about 75 feet higher than Chryslers highest occupied floor which was its observatory.

Does anyone have any supporting information on the observatory of 40 Wall that I could send to the Skyscraper Museum?

Are you sure you don't have this confused with 70 Pine?

quite sure, 70 Pine is a beautiful building and I have seen a few pictures of its observation area, Both recent and historical, But I talking about 40 Wall St.

In Neal Bascomb's book "Higher" he details the race to the skies between 40 Wall, Chrysler and Empire State Buildings. Several times throughout the book it mentions the observatory on the uppermost floor (69?) of 40 Wall. An illustration inside the cover shows the dimensions of the tallest buildings in Manhattan and shows an observation floor listed as being at the top of 40 Wall, the drawing is done by Yasuo Matsui one of the lead architects for 40 Wall, so I'm guessing he knew his own building. I have found a few pages on the web that list the building as having an observatory, But it is usually a 1-2 sentence description.

Maybe it was a space that used to be referred to as an observatory?

I've never known 40 Wall to have an observatory - as uaarkson said, it could've been a reference . . . perhaps to that club.

Its possible that the observatory was never used of course, however the Matsui Drawing I am referring to was done as a way to show that 40 Wall had the highest occupied floor over the completed Chrysler with its spire and should be considered the tallest, so very shortly before the building opened it was still being referred to as an observatory. But maybe it never actually functioned as one, either way the area the drawing refers to is the piston shaped area that sits on the top of the pyramid, I'm skeptical that such a space could have been converted to anything else as it is very small almost lookout or crows nest area similar I am guessing to the top of the Woolworth building.

One of the greatest skyscraper views there is. I love walking in the Financial District, turning the corner, and seeing this:

i have this book...and regarding the top/crown of 40 Wall Street (the Trump Building as is known today.....uurghghghg )

it says:

"40 Wall Street's lead-copper-clad pyramidal cap, complete with crystal ball finial, brought the 71 story skyscraper to a "modernized French Gothic" climax. The tapering penthouse floors accommodated machinery, observation rooms, and a small 66th floor residential apartment."

so there.....
