Maritime traffic in Canada

Since I suspect this site could be of some interest to users on these boards, I decided to share it. It shows live ship traffic around the world.

I expected more traffic in Montreal and Halifax, and Vancouver is much more important than I thought.

There's lots of Maritime traffic in Canada, mostly from Cape Breton and rural northern NB to Alberta.

A Cambridge company, exactEARTH, uses satellites to track maritime traffic around the world. The technology has all sorts of applications. I hope that before too long commercial aircraft will also be tracked this way.

Ya Vancouver has ships from over 100 countries each year enter the port.

Every ship over 300 gross tons is mandated to have AIS (Automated Identification System). This system is somewhat similar to the IFF used by aircraft but it is vunrable to spoofing. It is also limited to the range of ground stations but there is a move afoot to get satellites involved.

Yes, the technology is there. It just needs to be mandated.
