If you look at the renderings of AltHotel up close it looks as though it is clad in the same type of panelling as used on the podium. Doing that seemed to provide a little more visual continuity between the two (podium and tower) as compared to the clear material variation we see now. Unfortunately, probably due to cost cutting measures they went with the stucco panelling which has been a topic of discussion. It does appear though that there are small fins running along one side of each window (varied) still to be put in place. This should help provide a contrast to the otherwise currently flat surface, similar to, but not as dramatic or nice as the Buhler building. In all though I believe that once the complete finished exterior is revealed, all podium windows in, historical facade lit up, tower window treatments on, and the defining yellow trim and fin in place that it will still be a much needed and welcome contrast to the largely grey facade domination of downtown portage avenue. It will be nice to have more of this type of street level interaction downtown.

Let's be real though. The parkades even left as it is , is better the most parkades

As for the Alt. Awesome podium. Awesome use of a historical facade. Ugly as sin tower. It wouldn't matter if it were clad in brick. It doesn't match the podium at all. That's the biggest issue. Massive podium and miniature tower.

I just wonder in say 10-20 years if this will be an eyesore like what we built in the 80's which we thought was great then. Maybe one day this building will be reclad.

I can think of a few other places where the podium doesn't match the tower in this city. Maybe we could take advantage of that and develop a unique 'Winnipeg Style' of architecture? We've got this, Gary street, that other one on Wellington, etc.

Glasshouse tower crane base being prepared.

It was getting a bit predictable looking out the window since the parkade's crane went away.

I noticed that Friday evening coming home from work and thought that it was just being stored there but today when I drove by I saw that they putting forms in around it.

I just hope that they don't close down Hargrave to general traffic as detouring down Portage instead of going though the exchange via Ellice and King will add about 10 - 15 minutes to my day shift commute going home from City Place.

All of the above. Concrete - cast-in-place and precast, and structural steel.

They will need to leave one lane open as Hargrave is the only access to the Air Canada building and APTN loading docks.

Judging by kent's photo, it looks to me like they've clearly set it up to accommodate one lane of through traffic. Hargrave north of Portage is not that busy of a street, even at rush hour... I don't think this setup would create a huge inconvenience.

^ It changes throughout the day. They usually keep 1 lane up in the morning and evening rush hours but during the day it will often be totally closed for periods of time while they move large equipment into place.

From three weeks ago. Structual steel they wanted painted. This steel structure supports a slab of old brickwork. All that remains of the former building. Hopefully the paint adheres. Pigeon droppings everywhere.
