The FAA approved the height increase for 883' yesterday. I don't know what needs to be filed with the City for the increase.

This is going to be a BEAST. I know we all know that…..but I was struck as I crossed the S 1st bridge into downtown yesterday, this thing makes itself known already. Wow! So pumped to watch this rise up.

What a time to be an Austin urbanite.

Does this approval supersede the 848' height? Has the height change become official? If not, when do you think we'll know?

Thanks!

Good lord. SO it's going to be the tallest in town by almost 200'? I don't think the normies out there understand what is coming.

It’ll be taller than OKC’s Devon Tower rather than the same size. And at least it’ll fit in way better here being only 200’ taller than multiple towers in a full skyline rather than 350’ taller than a few other major towers in an empty skyline.

Within not too much time it'll have at least a couple other buildings that are as tall or taller.

This is what I don't get. Why wouldn't they go the extra few feet? It couldn't cost that much more, and they would increase the building's profile in the state.

Easier to save money and get to say “tallest in Austin” or “top ten in Texas” if the budget and other constraints don’t allow for more floors or weight in addition to the already-done height increase.

I have a family member who works for a general contractor that thinks this is the tallest building in the state already, and thinks the "new one" going up is the size of 1WTC.

People don't know.

I have another family member who refuses to believe the San Antonio metro area isn't the 8th largest in the country and keeps telling me its twice the size of Austin.

People don't really pay attention to stuff.

Want to see this specific family members really squirm? Tell him/her that Austin's metro will surpass San Antonio's, in populstion, during the 2030s. And, that's actually going to happen.

My roommate was pretty sure Austin's tower boom would rival NYC in like 10 years.

I was like, dude, if you account all the towers in Texas it wouldn't even reach half of what NYC has. Austin would only merely rival Dallas in 10 years.

I mean, this guy legit thinks San Antonio is bigger than Dallas. He's kind of nutty.

Yeah - as a former NYer there really isn't another place on Earth that comes close when it comes to Skyscrapers. I moved back home to Austin ~4 years ago and last time I was in NYC (Feb 2020) the city is already shockingly different looking skyline.

What is crazy to me is if Austin gets all the proposed buildings constructed at their current height (big if) - we start moving into the just a little smaller than Dallas/Houston/Atlanta conversation and into the Seattle/San Fran skyline size and well well clear of cities like Charlotte and Denver.. Bonkers for a city the size of Austin. I mean, we're 20 years removed from Corpus having a taller building than us

^^^Technically, Mobile, Alabama has a taller building than Austin right now.

FWIW...Charlotte & S.A. are roughly the same size (metro/csa). Not too much bigger than Austin.

So I got really bored one night and tried to count all the buildings that Austin would have if this (big if) did happen and all the towers were built. Then I compared them to all the towers that Dallas and Houston already have. And this is what I came up with.

Dallas

900 = 1
800 = 1
700 = 3
600 = 6
500 = 9
400 = 12
300 = 10
Total = 42

Austin

1000= 1
900 =
800 = 3
700 =4
600 =4
500 =10
400 =14
300 =34
Total = 69

Houston

1000= 1
900 = 2
800 =
700 = 10
600 = 9
500 =19
400 =17
300 =19
Total = 77

I used Wikipedia so I am still skeptical on some of these numbers but if they are anywhere nearly as accurate Austin might very well be within that Dallas range.

I'm very skeptical by the 10 towers in Dallas with towers ranging in the 300' ft. I haven't tried emporis website. It might be more accurate.

And I also didn't include one of the proposed towers on 4th street that could be a supertall. But what is the most striking to me is that if this all pans out, Dallas would have two towers at 800'+ while Austin would have four towers at 800'+, including the supertall on Red River.
