Another Soaring Starchitect Tower Ascends Over Revitalized Downtown Manhattan

Architect Rafael Viñoly is waving his wand all over the Manhattan, dotting the skyline with shadow-casting skyscrapers at 432 Park Avenue in Midtown, Three Waterline Square on the west side, and the newly unveiled 125 Greenwich, an 88-story residential tower from Bizzi & Partners Development. The soaring new 912-foot-tall building (just one block from David Childs’ One World Trade and the Santiago Calatrava-designed Oculus) is the latest starchitect-designed building luring residents back to the downtown, post 9/11.

Like 432 Park Avenue, Viñoly’s 125 Greenwich is a slender architectural structure inspired by its surroundings, featuring an exposed concrete column and curved glass façade that reflects the panoramic views of the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center and the Manhattan skyline. The structure is essentially "two giant upended I-beams that facilitate a nearly column-free interior for highly flexible residential configurations," according to Viñoly.

The tower will house 273 contemporary condos (418-square feet to 3,960 square feet), from $1.2 million studios up to $4.6 million three-bedroom residences. The building’s top three floors are dedicated to luxury amenities—a 50-foot lap pool, spa with sauna and steam room, fitness center, yoga studio, a screening room, and private dining. The residences boast sleek simplicity, a soaring lobby, sweeping views, custom millwork kitchens, and master bedrooms with Calcutta Covelano marble floors.

ritish duo March & White, acclaimed for superyacht interiors and exclusive London private clubs (The Arts Club and Devonshire Club), designed the tower’s interiors, their first large-scale residential development in the United States. These living spaces boast distinct palettes from urban street-inspired Terra brown-tones to Aqua, which recalls blues and grays reflected off the Hudson River, to Stratus whose softer shades (whites, blues, grays) reflect the clouds seen from the building’s crown.

Again, it's Viñoly we're looking at. He keeps proving the idea that less is more.

Also, it seems to me that since this whole tower superboom started, everything slated for Downtown was/is more or less subdued in form.

How that form is adorned is another kettle. Then again, Downtown's newer architecture is perhaps more constrained as an homage to its Art Deco past. 30 Park is the quintessesnce of this.
Even cerain aspects of this tower's design have a certain throwback motif...to me a sort of 1960's-ish vibe.

Extrapolating current height and design to everything shown (i.e. this tower's current look, Bjarke's 200G and 175G minus spires & center bracing), there now appears to be an almost Libeskindian upward sweep from 50 West to WTC1.

125G also makes for some pretty nice infill between the WTC complex and 45B...as NYGuy previously observed.
