The iphone does a pretty nice job with day shots and when it comes to convenience it destroys a DLSR. I've never gotten into taking photos with my phone, the Galaxy Nexus. The camera isn't great and the interface is clumsy and slow, at least compared to my SLR. I'm hoping in the next few years a) smartphone cameras improve and b) SLR interfaces become more connected and expandable. I'm confident both will happen and there will be more convergence in the future.

Anyhow, you definitely captured the feel of these places. Nice set.

Evocative shots. I still get these sudden pangs of powerful nostalgia for Asia that come out of nowhere, and your photos don't help.

If you were forced to choose one pic that says "Southeast Asia," I think this one would do in a pinch:

I don't know why but my jaw still drops at the amount of quality that the iPhone is capable of sometimes. Solid set as usual but I hope that you don't officially retire the dslr...

I avoided this thread for a couple weeks because of the iPhone thang but the quality's really good. Glad I tuned in.

BTW, you seem to have done a pretty thorough tour of SE Asia over the years. What are your favourite cities? Any surprises, disappointments?

Finally a KT thread featuring my favourite city in Asia (and the world), BKK.

Well done sir!

(also wondering the same as KevinfromTexas, is that some type of do-it-yourself incinerator?)

There's so many places to go it feels I haven't actually been anywhere at all. I've been to Bangkok around half a dozen times (both for work and holiday), once to Kuala Lumpur, once to Ho Chi Minh City, a few times to Taipei, a bunch of times to the Pearl River Delta in China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, etc) and a handful of trips to other parts of Asia like Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul and Busan.

That still leaves some pretty big holes like Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesian, the Philippines, the rest of Malaysia and Taiwan, Burma... not to mention so many places in China and Japan.

I really love Bangkok, Taipei and Tokyo. Seoul is cool too and Beijing and Shanghai both have their charms. The PRD is right next door so it barely feels like I have to travel there. Kuala Lumpur had great food and a lot of potential but it's a bit of a letdown as a city. The only Asian city I've actually disliked was Delhi. I enjoyed my time there (it was for work) but it's just not a very nice place.

Some of the photos were processed with Instagram (the ones with really obvious filter) but most didn't have anything special done to them – just a bit of basic adjustments in Photoshop.
