Let's hope that it's just a ploy for Jim Balsillie to buy them and move them to Hamilton and the league buys them and keeps them in Halifax.

The T&T reports:

- The NBL commissioner hopes to announce local ownership for the Moncton Miracles by the end of August.
- There will soon be a new local ownership group for the Halifax Rainmen.
- The league is close to granting a new franchise for Sydney NS.

So, it would appear that season five for the NBL is a go, and that there might be five Maritime teams, all with stable ownership groups.

Hopefully Halifax can get a team back! And with a team in Sydney, would it not help the chances of their ever being a team in St. John's?

The NBL announced a group of 25 investors in Halifax who will be saving the franchise in that city. Perhaps in an attempt to distance themselves from the fiasco earlier this year, the franchise will be renamed and will no longer be the "Rainmen". The team's new name will be revealed soon.

Also, the NBL commissioner stated he intended to spend a full 10 days in Moncton later this month in order to solidify a new local ownership group for the Moncton Miracles. The commissioner is on record as stating that a Moncton franchise is "vital" for the future of the league, as it is a linchpin for the Atlantic Division. Also, Norval McConnell has agreed to return as the team's community relations officer. His involvement in the franchise will make a big difference to the team due to his stature in the community and his connections.........

Can you explain who Norval McConnell is and what his connections are?

Sure:

Norval is a retired school teacher and school administrator with District 2 (now Anglophone South-east). He was well respected in his profession and heavily involved in the community, especially with multi sports camps, Moncton Kinsmen's Minor Basketball Association and the Moncton Minor Football Association.

He is a natural leader and a go-getter. He is an organizer in the same way that Ian Fowler was. He is well connected and knows how to make those connections work. The NBL commissioner would be well advised to use Norval's talents in his quest to save the Moncton franchise.......

Thanks MonctonRad. Yeah the commissioner would be foolish to not seek McConnell's help.

Makes me optimistic that the moncton miracles will survive.

You mean to tell me they have not gone belly up by now? I thought it would have happen earlier since there strapped for cash or at least seems that way with the articles stating the team was broke.

The issue for the Moncton Miracles has always been stable local ownership. The team has actually always been popular (despite a losing record almost every year), and has the second highest attendance in the league.

Given committed local owners and a couple of winning seasons, the Miracles should become a permanent fixture in the local sporting community.

The next couple of seasons will be crucial to both the Miracles and the NBL in general. The NBL could go either way. The new commissioner of the league however seems like a decent guy, so I'm hopeful that the league may prosper and grow. There's no reason why Canada can't have it's own domestic professional basketball league. I would like to see Moncton as a part of that.

Moncton Miracles Ready For Fifth Season
Posted on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 12:31 PM

Local Investors have thrown their support behind the Moncton Miracles, and the team is ready to hit the court for the fifth season in the National Basketball League of Canada.

General Manager Brennan Bellemare says they've changed their ticket prices, to help save the fans money.

There will be better benefits and prices for season tickets and there will also be new flex packs for fans as well.

The Miracles will hit the court in December for training, with the regular season beginning on Boxing Day.

A couple of NBL notes.

1)- apparently an expansion franchise will be awarded to Cape Breton, and the team will begin play this year. They will join the new team in Niagara Falls as expansion teams this year.
2)- the Brampton A's will be moving to Orangeville ON this season. Same owners as before, but it's a little further removed from TO, and therefore less likely to be overshadowed by the Raptors. The owner has just built a new training facility for the team in Orangeville too.

Central Division
- Windsor
- London
- Niagara Falls
- Orangeville

Atlantic Division
- Saint John
- Moncton
- Halifax
- Charlottetown
- Sydney

NBL 'Featured' in NY Times Article

A pretty big article in the NY Times about the struggles of making a living playing minor-league basketball. The article focuses on the Saint John Mill Rats.

It's not a glowing article by any standard, but highlights all the ups and downs of making the league/team work.

Good article.

Definitely not glamorous, but a realistic portrayal of minor league pro basketball in Canada. The situation would be the same in almost every other country in the world too.

Their is only one "show" for basketball in the world and that is the NBA. Every other league is a journeyman league, but that doesn't mean that the quality of the game is bad. The NBL is just under-appreciated.

There are a number of European leagues, primarily Russia, Greece, Turkey, France, and Germany, whose quality is far superior to riding around on school buses through the Maritimes.

Big weekend game by the Miracles against the Niagara River Lions.

The game was dedicated to the late Ian Fowler and his "number" was retired by the organization. An incredible 6,007 people attended the game. Granted, most of those tickets were sponsored, but this is still a big vote of confidence in the team by the community. This is the largest crowd of the season, for either the Miracles or the Wildcats.

The Miracles won too (123-105).

Apparently 7 of the 10 shares (at $50,000 a pop) in the Moncton Miracles have now been sold. They expect the rest to be sold by the end of the season. If this happens, the Miracles will finally have local ownership.......
