from "The Sleuth"

Second Show for Magnetic Hill?

What's that? A Magnetic Hill concert near the end of June? Isn't it Aug. 6 featuring AC/DC, as announced Thursday? Well. . . yes and fans are ecstatic the long-rumoured show is now confirmed. But this gumshoe's readers with sharp memories will recall that Sleuth has reported more than once that the city was aiming for two big shows at the Hill this year. Sleuth knows of what he speaks.

Moncton is virtually ready to announce a second show, which Sleuth hears will be in early July (not during Atlanticade, though that had at one time been a possibility), but it is holding off on that announcement briefly to give the August AC/DC show time to rack up sales and build momentum. The city shouldn't need much time, though, given that tens of thousands of AC/DC tickets at other venues have sold literally within minutes, not hours or days.

So who's the headliner for the July show? Sleuth is sworn to secrecy but can say rock 'n' roll fans will be flocking from far and wide. If the August show will feature one of the hottest acts on the planet right now, the July show won't be very far behind. It's definitely "bigger than KISS", rumoured to be playing somewhere down the road this summer to a much smaller than expected crowd.

well he had the highest grossing tour of 2008, so they would certainly fit the "bigger than Kiss" bill the sleuth was speaking of.

Grandstand tickets sell out in 12 minutes for Aug. 6 concert
BY ALAN COCHRANE
TIMES & TRANSCRIPT STAFF

Among the first to get AC/DC tickets were Curtis Culleton, Jimmy Banks, Matthew Berry, Zane Coombs and Jimmy MacLeod. "I got up at 5:30 a.m. and came out here to get in the line-up because I wanted to make sure I got grandstand tickets for AC/DC, and I got them just in time," Levesque said yesterday morning, proudly displaying four grandstand tickets for the Aug. 6 show by the legendary Australian rock band at the Magnetic Hill Concert Site in Moncton.

He was lucky to be near the front of the line because the grandstand tickets sold out in just 12 minutes as AC/DC fans around the Maritimes bought their tickets online or at Needs Convenience Stores.

Overall, more than 40,000 tickets were sold yesterday.

Levesque, who runs his own real estate company in Dieppe, was near the front of the line at the Moncton Coliseum when tickets went on sale at 10 a.m., and managed to grab some of the limited grandstand tickets available. Levesque paid $131.75 each for four tickets in the stands, a total of $527. Within minutes, other fans who stood in line hoping to snap up grandstand seats came away somewhat disappointed with general admission tickets.

Even though grandstand tickets are sold out, there are still many more general admission tickets available for the outdoor show, which is expected to attract about 80,000 people.

Promoters won't say exactly how many grandstand tickets were available or how many were sold.

At last year's concert by the Eagles, there were two large grandstands on either side of the stage capable of holding about 1,000 people but they won't be there this year as promoters and the city acted on a directive from the band to treat all fans equally and not offer "VIP" seating.

Last week, promoter Donald K. Donald issued a news release saying a limited number of grandstand tickets would be selling for $219.50 plus taxes and service charges. But that was changed so all tickets were priced at $99.50, which amounts to $131.75 when taxes and service charges are added.

"That's still a great deal," Levesque said. "We were prepared to pay the extra money for the grandstand seating."

Ian Fowler, Moncton's general manager of parks, recreation and tourism, said yesterday the change from more expensive seating and the VIP option was a directive from the band itself. He explained that the members of AC/DC wanted a consistent ticket price for all venues it is playing on this tour.

"So if you go see them in Moncton or anywhere else, the ticket price will be $99.50. They are playing for the fans and they want the fans to get value for their money," Fowler said. "So we've adjusted our plan to meet their demands. The promoter and the city need to deliver the service the band wants and that's where we take our direction from."

Fowler said the city never advertised or promised that there would be large bleachers or so-called VIP seating for this year's show, even though many fans have assumed there would be some kind of VIP package. But Fowler said lessons learned from past shows indicate that fans have different expectations when they pay the extra money for a so-called VIP ticket. He said people who purchase VIP tickets expect a seat close to the stage, a nearby parking spot and other perks.

Fowler said Needs stores in Woodstock, Fredericton, Saint John and Newfoundland sold their supply quickly and were calling for more to meet the fan demand. He said the online ticket system worked well for fans ordering tickets from their home computers.

Levesque, who showed up at the Coliseum wearing an AC/DC T-shirt, said fans are in for a heck of a show on Aug. 2. He knows because he and his wife Cindy travelled to New York last fall after winning a contest on Moncton's classic rock radio station C-103. They flew to New York, spent some time shopping and then boarded a bus to an indoor concert by AC/DC that was also attended by record company executives and singing stars from around the world.

About 200 people were in the line-up as tickets went on sale at the Coliseum yesterday morning. At the front of the line were Curtis Cullerton, Jimmy Banks and Jim MacLeod, who made the trip from Prince Edward Island the night before and spent about 15 hours waiting outside the box office. Zane Coombs, 17, of Moncton, was also in the line-up overnight and said this will be his first concert ever.

"I've been listening to their music since I was 10 years old. I'm really looking forward to it."

As the AC/DC fans stood patiently in the line, some were frustrated and disappointed that grandstand tickets sold out so soon. One fan, who refused to give his name, said he had driven all the way from Halifax to get in line and buy grandstand tickets.

He wasn't very far from the front of the line but left in a huff of frustration, saying he would buy general admission tickets online. Others also said they were frustrated but would buy general admission tickets if they couldn't get grandstand seats.

Promoters are expecting the Aug. 6 show to draw up to 80,000 people, which would meet or exceed the size of the crowd for the Rolling Stones show at the hill in 2005. Last year's show, headlined by the Eagles, drew over 55,000 people. Promoters have not said who the opening acts for AC/DC will be.

As AC/DC fans took the traditional method of lining up for tickets at the box office or bought them online, six others got dressed up as AC/DC guitarist Angus Young and played air guitar in front of City Hall at high noon yesterday.

Six women showed up for the air guitar event staged by C-103, all dressed up in short pants, suit coats, shirts, ties and caps in an effort to mimic Angus Young's trademark schoolboy uniform. Oddly, no men showed up to compete in the fun contest.

The ladies, who all appeared to be in their 30s and 40s, seemed a bit timid at first but got into the spirit of the competition as a crowd gathered to see what was going on.

In a strange juxtaposition, the official launch of the Frye Festival was wrapping up in the lobby of city hall just as the AC/DC air guitar contest was getting started outdoors, next to the flagpoles that still bear flags of the countries that participated in last week's World Men's Curling Championships.

The aspiring performers used a guitar similar to Young's trademark Gibson SG, but it wasn't plugged in. As C-103 Breakfast Club co-host Troy Tait cranked up the volume on the car stereo, each contestant danced around for 30 seconds, to the delight of the crowd that gathered to watch and laugh at the strange contest. One of the contestants even had her own fans, who brought signs and threw bras and panties at her feet while she strutted around and strummed the guitar.

Employees from Omista Credit Union also showed up to hand out prizes to the crowd as random acts of kindness and act as judges for the contest.

After all six Angus Young impersonators did their thing, they were subject to judging but it didn't really matter since all six got tickets to the AC/DC concert. The winners were Chantal Melanson, Tanya Gallant, Mary-Lynn Wilson, Patty Coates, Erin Dunfield and Donna Despres.

Melanson, who was named the overall winner, said she came out for fun but was happy to walk away with a ticket to the show. Others said they're very excited about AC/DC and can't wait for Aug. 6.

AC/DC fans get ready
Published Thursday April 23rd, 2009

Speculation begins on bands who will open for rockers at Aug. 6 concert
BY ALAN COCHRANE
TIMES & TRANSCRIPT STAFF

Tickets have only been on sale for a few days and the concert is still 105 days away, but fans of AC/DC are getting ready to beat a path to Metro Moncton.

Irish band The Answer is odds on favourite to open for the Moncton AC/DC concert in August.

"I've had calls from Afghanistan, from Canadian soldiers who will be home in time for the concert. They're getting their wives to buy tickets and they're booking space in the campground," local businessman Troy Boudreau said yesterday.

Immediately after the announcement of the AC/DC concert was official, Boudreau revamped his website and started taking calls from people looking for camping space next to the concert site. Last year, the concert campsite became a home-away-from-home for hundreds of Eagles fans and it looks like the AC/DC fans are already hunting for a place to stay since many local hotels are already booked for Aug. 6.

"We've had calls from people all over the place: from Maine, Ontario, Quebec and Vancouver so far," Boudreau said yesterday.

Tickets for the Aug. 6 show went on sale last Friday and sales have been brisk. The limited number of grandstand seats sold out in 12 minutes. Promoters said more than 40,000 tickets were sold on the first day but said they would not provide daily ticket sales figures after the first day.

The Rolling Stones show in 2005 drew a crowd of about 80,000 people and tickets were still being sold at the gate on the morning of the outdoor concert. The City of Moncton says the outdoor concert site can handle a crowd of about 100,000.

Promoters have not yet officially announced who will be the opening acts for AC/DC, but it is expected that Irish Group The Answer will be called in for the gig.

"We are expecting to do that tour, just waiting on final confirmation," a source inside The Answer's management office said in an e-mail from Ireland yesterday.

The Answer is an up-and-coming four-piece rock unit from County Down in Northern Ireland with a bluesy vintage rock sound a la Led Zeppelin, the Black Crowes and The Who. They recently released an album called Everyday Demons. They already served as opening act on the fall leg of the AC/DC tour.

It is expected that AC/DC will likely do a two-hour set of approximately 20 songs, beginning around 8:30 p.m. In previous concerts at the Magnetic Hill concert site, the gates have opened around noon with the first bands beginning around 3 p.m.

At last year's concert on the hill, the Sam Roberts Band began at 3:30 p.m., followed by Scottish singer KT Tunstall at 5:30 p.m., and John Fogerty at 7 p.m. The Eagles began their set just after 8:30 p.m. and played until 11 p.m.

AC/DC has been a fan favourite in Metro Moncton and the initial announcement of their concert had been the subject of speculation for many weeks. And now that tickets are selling briskly, there is much speculation around town as to what bands will fill the opening time slots. Some of the band names being thrown around include Nickelback, Steve Miller, the Foo Fighters and Motorhead. All three of these bands appear to be free on Aug. 6.

Don Coleman, an AC/DC fan from Hillsborough, has started an online movement to have Canadian group MOXY serve as opening act in Moncton.

He says MOXY is the only Canadian band who headlined a tour -- in Texas in the 1970s -- with AC/DC as the opening act and suggests that turnabout is fair play.

Formed in Toronto in the 1970s, MOXY was known for the 1975 hit song Can't You See I'm a Star

Yet another festival:

McLean headlines StanFest

Chronicle-Herald
Thu. Apr 23 - 4:47 AM

The writer of one of the best-known songs of the ’70s, Don McLean headlines the 2009 Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso from July 3 to 5.

McLean, who wrote and performed American Pie, is among the international, national and regional talent at this year’s festival. Also performing are Canadian Country Music Award winner Corb Lund and Juno Award-winning songstress Sarah Harmer.

"When we started the festival, I always dreamed that someday we would be able to present the songwriting legends of our generation. It’s really come true with artists like Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Richie Havens and now Don McLean," festival artistic director Troy Greencorn said in a news release.

"Besides penning the iconic American Pie, there’s so many other hits, songs like Crying, Castles in the Air, Vincent, And I Love You So and Everyday. Heck, my wedding waltz was To Have and To Hold, a lesser-known Don McLean gem."

Dozens of other singer-songwriters and groups will perform at StanFest, which honours one of Canada’s most prolific songwriters, Stan Rogers. The weekend features a variety of genres, including folk, country, jazz, swing, blues, rag, gospel, pop, rock, bluegrass and world music and is a three-time East Coast Music award winner for event of the year.

Advance tickets are now on sale, with weekend passes at $80 and daily tickets also available. Tickets are available at all Ticketpro outlets, by phone at 1-866-311-9090 and online at www.ticketpro.ca.

For full event details and camping information, contact the festival office at 1-888-554-7826 or visit: www.stanfest.com.

Tom Cochrane to headline outdoor concert during Cape Breton BikeFest

The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — Tom Cochrane’s smash hit Life is a Highway is sure to go over big with the crowd expected to take in his performance this summer.

One of the biggest names in Canadian music, Cochrane is an exciting addition to the Cape Breton BikeFest schedule, which is expected to draw thousands of motorcyclists to the island, July 31-Aug. 3.

Smooth Herman’s Promotions, in association with Cape Breton BikeFest and 101.9 The Giant, have announced that Cochrane and rock band Red Rider will headline an outdoor concert at the Sydney Marine Terminal Aug. 1, as part of the Budweiser Concert Series.

Cochrane has been recording since 1973, and Red Rider joined him in 1986. In 1991 he released his chart-topping solo effort, Mad Mad World which became one of the biggest-selling Canadian records of all time.

“We want the people who come to Cape Breton for BikeFest, and the people of Cape Breton themselves, to have a great night — and that meant bringing in someone who was going to get people out, be part of the crowd, and feel the energy that’s running through all of our events,” said Scott Boyd, chair of the Cape Breton BikeFest Society.

Boyd noted plans for the four-day BikeFest are going very well and several event announcements will be made in the coming weeks.

“We’ve spent months meeting community partners all over the Island,” he said. “And when they hear what we’re doing, and take a look at the events we’ve attracted from Inverness to Glace Bay, they come up with their own way to contribute to the festival and make this a memorable experience for everyone.”

Cape Breton BikeFest 2009 is supported by Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture, Destination Cape Breton, Joe’s Warehouse, Smooth Herman’s, 101.9 The Giant, 103.5 The Eagle, Casino Nova Scotia, the Cape Breton Post, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, and Centre 200.

Tickets for Cochrane’s concert are on sale now at Joe’s Warehouse Restaurant and online at www.smoothhermans.ca.

Country Music at Centre 200...it's a sad day!

Sorry, just not a fan of country music...at all.

Johnny Reid

CCMA male artist of 2008 Johnny Reid to perform at Centre 200

LAURA JEAN GRANT
The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — With a dozen years under his belt, Johnny Reid has learned a thing or two about what it takes to make it in the country music industry.

“I’ve been singing for a long time. This is my 12th year in the business,” said the Scottish-born Canadian singer-songwriter who now calls Nashville home.
“They say the biggest lesson you can learn in the music business is to get to know the people who are buying your music.”

And Reid will get a chance to learn a little bit more about the Cape Breton contingent of his fan base with a performance at Centre 200 in Sydney, Saturday at 8 p.m. He said the audience, first and foremost, can expect a good time.

“I bring some of the best musicians in the world to the stage. We’ve got a nice big band up there. They can expect a lot of heart, a lot of soul and a lot of passion. I think, above anything else, that’s kinda what I’ve been bringing to the table since I started,” said Reid.

Possessing a genuine passion for country music has been key to both surviving a career in music and connecting with fans, according to the Juno-nominated country singer.

“I’m in the music business because I feel like that’s what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel very fortunate because I’ve been able to make a living at something that I would do for free and I think people recognize that,” he said. “I’ve always been a big believer in people. I’ve always believed that people can recognize the truth and that’s what I’ve been trying to do. I’ve been getting up there, being myself, and singing the songs that I enjoy and singing the things that I care about.”

Reid’s star has been on a steady rise over the last few years, with the release of three albums in just four years. The first, Born to Roll, was released in 2005, and followed up in 2007 by Kickin’ Stones. With hits like Love Sweet Love, Darlin’, Thank You and the title track Kickin’ Stones propelling it, the album was certified platinum in Canada and earned him two Canadian Country Music Association awards for top-selling Canadian recording and top male artist in 2008.

So, after years on the road as the opening act for country stars like Brad Paisley, Martina McBride and Dwight Yoakam, Reid found himself the headliner of two tours in 2008, racking up over 120 performances — all while preparing for his next album.

“Last year I really had a great opportunity to get to know my audience and when I went into the studio (to record Dance With Me) I really had my audience in mind when making that record. It’s a really focused record. I think it’s probably the most focused record I’ve recorded both musically and lyrically, as well as artistically,” he said. “I’m very much like my audience so when I go and make a record, I just go in and make a record that I would love to listen to, that I would want to buy.”

That philosophy is proving successful for Reid, who released Dance With Me last month.

“The album went gold in less than 48 hours so the reaction was a good one,” said Reid, who will head back into the studio in May to record a Christmas album.

Tickets to Reid’s concert at Centre 200 are $56 and are available online at www.reservatech.net, by phone toll-free at 1-877-545-3330, or in person at the Centre 200 box office.
Hmmm...this went out on Wednesday, and he's playing tomorrow. Sounds like he was having some trouble selling tickets. Even though I don't like country music, I like to see successful concerts. I have no idea who this guy is, but if his management expected him to fill C200, he must have some kind of following.

Johnny just played in Moncton, and I'm told it was a great concert...gotta support the Canadian talent even when they are not a music you normally listen too.

^There was no mention of how big the crowd was, but apparently it was a really good show according to a columnist for the post, which is good to see.

Second concert planned for Hill
Published Saturday May 2nd, 2009

Headliner, supporting acts to be announced Monday
By Brent Mazerolle
Times & Transcript Staff

Now the annual Magnetic Hill Music Festival has a summer kick-off.

Another top act mega-concert at the Magnetic Hill Concert Site will be announced at the Delta Beauséjour Hotel at 1 p.m. on Monday.

No one who can say with authority who that top act is isn't talking, but the City of Moncton's Ian Fowler says, "you're looking at an A-list act because of the size of the venue and cost of setting up."

Because any band playing the Hill will want 20,000 to 25,000 tickets sold at minimum, it's a pretty safe bet one of North America's premier outdoor concert sites will be hosting only household names now and in the future.

Who the latest household name is and who the opening acts are will be announced at the news conference, which is also open to the public.

"Any music enthusiasts are invited. If people are curious about what's happening, they should drop by," Fowler says.

The media conference is hosted by promoters DKD Events and AEG Live, along with the City of Moncton.

DKD Events is the Montreal-based company founded by Donald Tarlton (AKA Donald K. Donald) that brought the Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang tour here in 2005. They partnered with AEG Live to bring the Eagles here last year and are doing the same to bring AC/DC to the Hill August 6.

While even the date of this other summer concert is a secret, Fowler would say it's coming earlier in the summer, before the AC/DC show. That's the best way to make things work, though he said it was premature to say if putting on two shows will provide the promoter with economies of scale.

Fowler believes the double bill for the summer of 2009, "reinforces the value of the infrastructure investments we and the province have made. The turnkey operation is starting to take hold."

Earlier this week, Premier Shawn Graham said the province will be on-board with another modest investment in making "Moncton the entertainment capital of Atlantic Canada," and Fowler says, "there's some ongoing dialogue between the province and the city."

Because provincial investment is a matter of providing matching dollars for each municipal dollar spent, the city is looking for a smaller investment this summer, as its own money is being pulled in a lot of different directions this year.

Nevertheless, there's no question the city will continue to expand the site slowly but steadily.

"We think we can handle three shows a summer if they're spaced out properly," Fowler says. Asked though if he's dropping a hint about a possible Magnetic Hill hat trick, he says it's no longer likely for this summer.

"I think people will be pleased that, for the first time, we're delivering two shows," he said.

Meanwhile, according to the independent report of the City of Moncton's auditor, provided to council earlier this month, the Eagles concert made a modest profit, about $12,000, when you include things like the city's share of service charges on its ticketing network, and revenues of Codiac Transit.

That profit is the municipal corporation's share specifically, and doesn't include the millions of dollars in economic spin-off the summer concerts generate.

It's Bon Jovi, no secret here

Recopied from the Moncton page........just to make it all official.

Moncton has landed another big summer concert as rockers Bon Jovi will headline a June 27 concert at Magnetic Hill.

Event organizers and the city announced at a Monday afternoon news conference that Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings will join Bon Jovi, along with State of Shock, Mobile and Alfa Rococo.

Tickets will go on sale on May 8. General admission tickets will go for $99.50 and the grandstand seating will cost concert-goers $199.50.

The concert promoter is Donald K. Donald, who organized the Rolling Stones concert in 2005 that started a series of major summer outdoor concerts in the southeastern New Brunswick city.

Moncton has already confirmed that legendary Australian rockers AC/DC will play at the Magnetic Hill site on Aug. 6.
