93-year-old tea room reopens in Sackville
CBC News Posted: Aug 2, 2012 6:31 AM AT Last Updated: Aug 2, 2012 7:33 AM AT

Mel's Tea Room has operated in this location since 1945. (Tori Weldon/CBC)

One of Sackville's oldest businesses reopened this week under different ownership.

Mel's Tea Room had been run by four generations of the Goodwin family until they sold it in late June.

Ken Mikalauskas and his wife recently bought the tea room — a business that started as a fruit and ice cream parlour in 1919.

"We didn't want to see it close down like so many small businesses in town so we wanted to keep it going, keep it going as Mel's and continue with the tradition," Mikalauskas said.

Melbourne Goodwin, the original owner, purchased Cahill Block in 1944 and relocated the tea room to its current location in 1945.

The neon sign that juts out from the building is the original, dating back to the 1950s.

There are booths, a jukebox and a row of swiveling stools that line the counter. Merv Crooker says not much has changed since he first started eating there in 1964.

"Mel's and the Marshlands Inn are about all that's left of the old businesses that I can think of. Yes, it's very nice that it's still a restaurant, I'm pleased about that,” Crooker said.

Mikalauskas spent four weeks renovating, cleaning and updating the kitchen, but tried his best to keep the diner's character and old charm.

He says he feels the weight of running a business with such deep roots in the community.

"Everyone was very concerned, as to what was going to happen here, I can understand that because even when we heard that it was for sale and that it might close, we thought that just can't happen."

That's what convinced the couple to buy it.

Mikalauskas say Mel's is more than a restaurant, it's an institution.

Mini-library pops up in Sackville
CBC News Posted: Aug 20, 2012 6:07 AM AT Last Updated: Aug 20, 2012 6:05 AM AT

A new mini-library is giving the people of Sackville access to books, free of charge with no worry of late fees.

It's called the Little Free Library and it operates similar to a book exchange.

little free libraries are popping up all over the world.

Read more:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-br...e-library.html

personal note - for those of you under the misapprehension that this is the Sackville town library, I can assure you there is a much larger official version elsewhere in the town. There is also the Mt. A university library. It's pretty big too.....

From the Mount Allison University website:

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell announced the official name of the University’s new Centre for the Arts during a sod-turning ceremony on Friday, Oct. 12 to celebrate the beginning of construction on the building.

The 50,000-square-foot centre, which will be home to the Fine Arts and Drama programs, will be known as the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, in honour of Mount Allison’s fifth chancellor.

“Purdy Crawford has been one of Mount Allison’s most prominent success stories for decades,” Campbell says. “His long-time commitment to the University and his dedication to its continual improvement have been exemplary, inspirational, and consequential. We are very proud and pleased to have his distinguished name associated with this exciting new project.”

Crawford graduated from Mount Allison with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. He went on to complete a law degree at Dalhousie University, and a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School. He has built one of the most respected resumés in Canadian business, first as a lawyer, then as a businessman.

Through it all, he has remained connected to his alma mater, serving on the Board of Regents and as honorary co-chair of the $96-million JUMP fund raising campaign, in addition to his five years as chancellor from 1995 to 2000.

“I am thrilled to see construction on the Centre for the Arts go ahead, and so proud that my family is part of it in such a special way,” says Board of Regents chair Suzanne Crawford, Purdy Crawford’s daughter. “My father has always deeply believed in investing in the next generation and he is honoured to have his name associated with this new academic building, where future generations of students will be able to learn their craft in the best possible environment.”

Construction on the $30-million Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts began in August 2012. The Centre — Mount Allison’s first new academic building in more than three decades — is scheduled to open in September 2014.

Featuring a large atrium that will provide area for exhibitions and receptions as well as a gathering space for students, the Centre will be home to contemporary art studios with facilities for painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and other media; a studio hall with reinforced floors, heightened ceilings, and controlled lighting; and a 100-seat black box theatre with cutting-edge sound and lighting.

The Centre is being built without any government or borrowed funding, with $20 million of the total cost coming from private donors.

Sackville Group Pitches Pedway Project

from CBC:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-br...dway-1132.html

A new group is Sackville seeking funding to build a pedway over the Trans-Canada Highway, bridging the two sides of the eastern New Brunswick town.

Sackville is divided by the Trans-Canada Highway and the proposed pedway would cost between $500,000 and $1.5 million.

The pedway would also connect pedestrians to the Trans-Canada Trail and get high school students across four lanes of traffic safely.

Christine DeHaas, who chairs the committee spearheading the project, said Sackville residents now have to choose between a lengthy detour or crossing the four lanes of highway traffic.

“My children when they were little, I would bike with them in the chariot, and we loved going to Silver Lake, on the other side of the highway. It just came to me one day with the really scary feeling of crossing the highway with children or going all the way around that it would be brilliant if we had a pedway,” she said.

When Alex Thomas was in high school, he used to cross the Trans-Canada Highway everyday going back and forth to school.

“It's definitely not something my parents would want me to do,” he said.

Thomas, who is on the committee that is looking at building the pedway, said he was careful, but he's heard of some close calls.

“There is a suggested detour which takes you to the Main Street exit, it's also just a really congested part of town so if you're cycling there's no bike lanes, it's not marked and that sort of thing,” he said.

A pedway was first proposed about a decade ago but the project stalled.

Stacey Merrigan, a member of Renaissance Sackville, a town-sponsored community group helping with the effort, said the project still has to clear several hurdles.

"They still need to have some actual specs drawn by an engineer, they need to find out what kind of budget they are looking at and then even when they have that, they need to find funding,” Merrigan said.

Personal note - I know exactly where they want to build the pedway. It is where the old railway right of way is that used to extend north from the town. The right of way is now occupied by the Trans Canada Trail. On the south side of the TCH, the access would be by the Waterfowl Park. On the north side, Tantramar High School has their own marshland park. The pedway would connect the two parks, provide access to the Trans Canada Trail leading to PEI and would also provide safe pedestrian access to Tantramar High School over the TCH from the east end of town. This project has considerable merit!

For the 16th time, MacLean's Magazine has ranked Mount Allison University as the top undergraduate university in Canada. For the first time, Mt. A has also come first in the reputational survey.

This is big news! By placing first in the reputational survey, this shows that a degree from Mt. A is viewed in a very positive light by prospective employers. This is truly a feather in the cap for the university.

Not really development related, but it is good to see that Peter Mansbridge has been reappointed to a second term as chancellor of Mount Allison University. He has been pretty active in his role as chancellor, despite his other responsibilities with the CBC.

I was down in Sackville today. I would say that the foundation for the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts is largely complete. Now that Mansbridge has been reappointed, he should still be chancellor when the new arts centre opens in 2014. I imagine he will be there to give a speech and cut the ribbon....

Two things:

#1 - The structural steel is now going up for the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts at Mount Allison University. This will be a far more imposing building than the renderings suggested......

#2 - There is a sign up on the United Church manse property just behind the Marjorie Young Bell Convocation Hall. The sign shows a rendering of a rather large four storey apartment building and indicated that units were now for lease, implying construction is imminent.

I will likely be back down in Bagtown in the next few days, I will try to snap a couple of photos....

Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts at Mount Allison University.

This building actually will be quite imposing when it is finished. The structural steel already installed actually accounts for only about 1/4 of the finished length of the building, and corresponds to the front portion of the right hand side of the building as seen in this rendering:

These are a few pictures I took today:

Finally, this building is planned for the old United Church Manse property adjacent to the back of the Marjorie Young Bell Convocation Hall:

This picture shows exactly where this building is proposed.

As the sign says, it will be a mixed use building with commercial on the ground floor and residential above.....

Historic Sackville church eyed as future cultural centre

Owner wants a proposal by January or the church may be demolished
By Sonya Varma, CBC News Posted: May 13, 2013 6:21 AM AT Last Updated: May 13, 2013 9:06 AM AT

It's an iconic local landmark. For 135 years the old United church has sat at Sackville's main intersection. The white exterior only hinting at what's inside.

"The very spectacular thing is the interior," says long-time Sackville resident Virgil Hammock.

"It's the sanctuary which is all hardwood. It was all hand done by local Sackville craftsmen and it's the kind of craftmanship you just don’t see anymore because people just can't do it."

The church is now privately owned and has been sitting idle for months.

Hammock is leading the charge to save it from being torn down.

Hammock says in addition to the intricate woodwork, the church contains stain glass windows and a classic Casavant pipe organ.

"The idea is we'd like to save the building whatever use we can make of it," says Hammock.

Hammock has support from town council, Renaissance Sackville and other local organizations that are keen on preserving the building and converting it into a cultural centre.

Hammock says Sackville's Live Bait Theatre is interested in the church; the troupe needs a new home and church has great acoustics.

John Lafford, the church's current owner, said he would prefer to see the historic structure kept intact.

"It's part of Sackville and our company was born in Sackville," says Lafford.

'Long way from a done deal'
But the old church is far from move-in ready.

It's leaking and needs a new roof. It could cost as much as $400,000 to stabilize and another $400,000 to convert it to a cultural centre.

“It's a long way from a done deal," says Hammock.

"It's is expensive and will cost a fair amount of money and we're looking at provincial and federal money and private money."

Lafford says he's willing to give the church supporters some leeway, but he can't wait indefinitely for a firm proposal.

He said he'd like to see one by January.

"If there's no funding, I think the church would have to come down," says Lafford.

Hammock says if the church were to be torn down very little inside would be salvageable and the classic Casavant organ would likely sold for scrap.

The structural steel for the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts has now been completely installed. I will try to grab a picture the next time I'm in Sackville.

Also, initial site prep is taking place for this mixed use building, that will be erected on the old United Church manse site.

Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts Update:

Pictures taken today (August 23rd, 2013)

There was lots of other refurbishments going on throughout the campus of Mt. A, mostly new topcoat on internal roadways and some new concrete sidewalks, but it certainly gave the impression of the campus being a hive of activity......

Also:

They are working on the ground floor of this new four storey mixed use apartment building immediately behind the Marjorie Young Bell Convocation Hall.......

Apparently the decision has been made and the RCI shortwave broadcasting towers adjacent to the TCH on the Tantramar Marsh will be dismantled this fall.......
