Here is a link to the pdf from a document used for recent public consultations regarding refurbishment of a portion of Bridge Street in downtown Sackville. Looks like this could be quite nice.

Here are a couple of images from the document:

from the Sackville Tribune Post:

Park makeover nearing completion
KatieKatie Tower
Published on August 06, 2014

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Work on the downtown park is finally nearing the finish line, more than a month and a half beyond the anticipated re-opening date.

Andrew Amos, the project manager who is overseeing the park redevelopment, said several delays have slowed down the makeover project this spring and summer – including weather- and soil-related issues.

With the contractor starting work in early spring, the delays came early on with snowstorms, even into late April and May, said Amos. That set the workers back a few weeks from the get-go.

“The first thing the contractor had to do when we awarded the contract was come to the site and blow out snow,” he said.

Then it was determined the existing soil on site was worse than anticipated “so what we had hoped to be able to leave in place had to be trucked off site and replaced,” said Amos. This extra excavation, trucking and new backfilling caused another delay.

This issue was followed up by “on-again off-again rain” in June, which created problems for the contractors in trekking across the site with equipment without creating huge mud pits.

Fortunately, said Amos, the last month of constant, warm and dry weather through July has allowed the contractor to get the main elements done to the point where landscaping could commence.

“Had the weather stayed like it was in June, I think we would have lost the whole season,” he said.

The last month has been busy with work now nearly complete on the multi-purpose building, the bandstand being finished, underground services done, the site lighting installed, the playground equipment relocated, and the final grading done.

Amos said the landscapers began laying sod last week and other work to be done over the next couple of weeks includes the repaving of the tennis and basketball courts, the pouring of the concrete for the splashpad, planting the trees and shrubs, and finishing the walkways.

The goal, he said, is to open the park to the public during the week of Aug. 25.

“The contractor will do whatever he can to accelerate this work - he's keenly aware of our very strong desire to get this park open to the residents of Sackville ASAP. And we'll hope for a nice warm September so we can get some good use this season.”

The "good news," said Amos, is that the contractors will finish the job on budget.

I hope this looks better in person because based on those photos, this one looks quite dated already...

Thanks for the update though!

The Burlington Teen Tour Band recently performed at Mount Allison U, at the duck pond. Here is a link to the pictures from that event.

The Save Easy on Main Street will be rebranded by Loblaw's as a Your Independent Grocer store (I'm not too keen on the name). Apparently this is a chain wide rebranding and will include the store in Salisbury too. The store will be completely renovated as a result of the rebranding.

Independant grocer

They have a lot of these in Ontario, when living there I had one 2 blocks from my place, very similar to foodland, they are a step up from the save easy's, they are nice inside and out.

That may not matter so much for sackville, but it will be a step up for Salisbury, it's a growing community and needs a better grocery store than the current save easy.

Oh, I wasn't laughing at redoing the grocery store. I just find it hilarious that Loblaws, by far Canada's largest grocery retailer and now drug store, has the audacity to imply a store they own is 'independent'.

The one in St-Antoine will be converted too.

Concept proposed for old fire, police station

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sell it and move on? Or re-purpose it to become a community-centered facility that could become a focal point in Sackville’s downtown core.

These are the questions being posed by town councillor Shawn Mesheau, who is hoping to get local residents talking about the potential opportunities that exist with the former fire hall/police station building on Main Street.

Apparently the Vogue Cinema is Sackville is in trouble.

They need approximately $100k for roof repairs and debt repayment. They are starting a fundraising campaign to see if they can come up with the money in the next two months.

Hard times in Bagtown. The Wendy's restuarant next to the TCH on Main Street closed last month.......

This sounds reasonable. If these urgent repairs are not undertaken, then there will be nothing left to save in the future.......

Salvage plan to dismantle the former Sackville United Church was approved at the heritage meeting today. Owners are free to take it down.

Sackville United Church to be torn down
Sackville Tribune Post
Published on March 18, 2015

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville’s downtown landscape is about to change.

The fate of the former Sackville United Church on the corner of Main and York Streets was finally decided on yesterday, with the heritage board voting 4-1 to issue a demolition permit to JN Lafford Realty.

Heritage board members who voted in favour of issuing the permit said they were doing so with a heavy heart, as the church has stood as a community landmark in the heart of Sackville’s downtown for more than 135 years.

Vogue Theatre fundraiser less than a quarter of way to goal with hours remaining in campaign
Sackville Tribune Post

SACKVILLE, N.B. – With only hours left in a campaign to raise much-needed funds for the Vogue Theatre in downtown Sackville, $22,668 of the $100,000 goal has been raised.

Jeff Coates, who has owned the theatre since 2006, launched the online fundraising campaign earlier this year with the goal of raising enough funds to help cover costly operational and repair bills that have begun to mount.

personal note - No good news out of Bagtown today. I also miss the Wendy's restaurant out near the TCH too........

I do hope that some form of "white knight" steps forward to rescue the Vogue Cinema. It's a bit of a hike into Moncton to catch a movie for students at MTA. Even the twin cinemas in Amherst are a bit inconvenient as a lot of students don't have cars. I wonder if there might be some interest by the university in helping out in some way?

While the loss of Sackville United Church is regrettable, it is a wooden structure that was at the end of it's lifespan. Renovations would have been extraordinarily expensive. I can see this lot being redeveloped into a mixed use development of some form. It is right next to the university and very close to the main intersection in the downtown. There have been two other new building constructed in the immediate area in the last few years. I don't think this lot will remain vacant for too long.

Mount Allison University sports field to get $1.5M upgrade
The field will now be able to be used for almost the entire year
The Canadian Press Posted: May 10, 2015 9:11 AM AT
Last Updated: May 10, 2015 9:12 AM AT

Athletes at Mount Allison University in Sackville will have a new field to play on in the next school year.

University officials say $1.5-million will be spent to upgrade its athletics field.

The university says work on the artificial turf field will begin this summer.

It says the upgrade will mean the field can be used for almost the entire year, compared to the four months it's currently in use.

Personal note - It's about bloody time!! The football Mounties are the university's team, and have been one of the top college football teams in the country for the last couple of years. If the university wants to be serious about supporting the team in the long term, then this is an investment that they had to make. The Mounties will now suddenly have the type of facilities that most high schools in the region already have. Now, if only the university could get the funding for some proper bleachers too..... :roll eyes:

EDIT - On doing some further research, apparently this project will be 100% funded through an alumni campaign, awesome!!!
