Here are some pictures of the newly-opened Museum of Natural History in Manila Philippines. The building was built during the American occupation of the Philippines. It was built in a piece of land that was designed by Daniel Burnham to be the new Capitol for the Philippines. The plan actually kinda mimics the Washington DC mall, although a bit smaller. However, WW2 broke and only three buildings were built (with the biggest one of them destroyed, but reconstructed after the war). For the longest time, the three buildings housed various government departments. This one here used to be the office of the Department of Tourism. Now all three buildings have been coverted as museums and is now part of the National Museum precinct in Manila.

The main attraction of this new museum is the canopy built in the middle of what used to be a courtyard. It is called Tree of Life.

So glad they reverted back to the colour white. It used to be painted in this cream/yellow and greenish/grey combo. Yuck!

Across the Museum of Natural History is what used to be it's spitting image, the Museum of Anthropology. It used to house the Department of Finance. Here are some pictures.








A few steps from the Museum of Anthrophology is the National Art Gallery. It used to house the Senate of the Philippines and as I've mentioned in an earlier post was heavily destroyed during World War II.

I just discovered this thread, even after all the time I spent on this forum. I love museums, and I'm really glad to see a thread like this, and thanks to geomorph, there seems to be plenty of activity. Now, I assume that most of the major museums in Philly, New York, DC, and Chicago I've been to are already here, so here's a smaller one that I really love.

No worries, geomorph. It's my pleasure to share them. I love museums especially those about art and history. I can spend an entire day in a museum actually. Haha.

About the National Museum in the Philippines, I haven't been there in ages. Last time I was there was during a field trip when I was in elementary, so way back in the 80s! As far as I know, there are no entrance fees to the National Gallery and the Museum of Anthropology. Not sure with the newly-opened Museum of Natural History. I hope they do it like in New York's Met where you can pay whatever you want.

The National Museum of the Philippines is planning to add more buildings in the complex. I don't think it will be built in the same neo-classical style as the existing buildings. Not sure what to say about that yet, as there have been no renders yet. However, you can see the placeholders in their mock-up below


Based on the picture above, they are also planning to improve the rotunda as well. Rumour has it that it will be a common entrance space for all museums in the complex and that underground passageways will be built to connect all of them. I think it is a great idea. You know, being in the tropics, it gets really really hot and sticky in Manila so an underground and air-conditioned space to move around would be a welcome treat for visitors, both locals and tourists alike. If they are not building a common entrance space, I hope they still remove the statue that is currently there. It used to be a roller skating rink with a fountain in the middle but has been replaced with a statue that has nothing to do with the city of Manila.

Btw, there was another proposed design to the Museum of Natural History. The dome design won, but I find the other one also being good. If ever the National Museum of the Philippines plans to renovate the Museum of Anthropology, they can use this "losing" design.

i went to the amnh for the final day of the gloomy, groovy early 1970s era of the hall of minerals wing. its going to be closed for years while they rebuild it. some of those fonts will be lost forever lol:
