^No man, that hill is miles away from the River Valley. It used to be a landfill, but I believe it is now pretty much at capacity. The hill is located next to Inland Cement, so the area between 156 and 170 streets, and north of the CN tracks. You could probably get a good skyline shot from up there granted you had a super-duper zoom on your camera lens.

Landfill hill

Thanks for the response! So is that hill as high as it looks (looks to be 300 feet high) or is it a bit of an optical illusion?

Here's a really big pic of the garbage mountain for context:

I hope that 'mountain' continues to grow into a ski hill someday!

Yes they are, I drive by them every so often and there are workers on site.

Yes, the landfill is close to capacity. I believe they will be closing it up within the next year or two.

New Foot Bridge

Here is a couple of shots of the new Fort Edmonton Foot Bridge. Not great since I was paddling a canoe at the time

^ awesome!! Cant wait to walk it!

The garbage mountain is awesome! I'm glad they are closing it off; I'd assume there would be some decent methane venting going on there too..

Perhaps the next location for a landfill can be further out of the city?

^ it's not a landfill per se. It's Waste Management's private garbage pile - so lots of commercial and construction waste. Maybe multi-family is in there as well?

The City of Edmonton is a leader in waste management and diverting waste from landfills, but it doesn't look like Waste Management or their clients try very hard.

I love the looks of that footbridge, but I think it's too bad they didn't build it somewhere that's a bit more prominent. You're not going to see it unless your house overlooks it, if you're passing over it or passing under it.

Or another golf course – with a wind factor integrated into its handicap. Is the pile stable enough to support structural development? Emitting gasses too hazardous? A park would be nice.

I'm at Barnett House often. It looks like a new glass facade will be added soon.

Not everything that's awesome needs to be accessible by car.

^ I think he was clearly insinuating that he wishes it was in a place that more people could experience it. IE. It would be more of a landmark in the downtown part of the river valley... Cars have nothing to do with this.

There will be other bridges and hopefully some iconic ones. This is the best one that I've floated under in Edmonton, and I've gone under allot of bridges around the world.

So few people get on the river here. The valley and river are a spectacular part of Edmonton and I've been blessed to be able to use for over 30 years.

Thanks ChillN - yep - that's exactly what i was insinuating. I think the Fort Edmonton footbridge would potentially leave a better impression with people rather than a bridge like this:

There are some massive footbridges in Edmonton. Some of which could definitely do with an update (looking at you Laurier park/hawrelak park)

The Beauna Vista foot Bridge was the last one completed. Was meant to emulate the 5st bridge.

Good thing that that bridge is currently possibly slated to get replaced by a new bridge for pedestrians and low-floor SELRT. I think that the new bridge is a prime opportunity for a signature piece of work to be put in our river valley, moreso than a new commuter bridge near rossdale. Something modern but timeless, to contrast the High Level at the opposite end of downtown.
