Bowdoin College, established in 1794 by Governor Samuel Adams. Alumni includes, President Franklin Pierce, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, sexologist Alfred Kinsey, Major General Oliver Otis Howard founder of Howard University, & Dr. Augustus Stinchfield who went on to co-found Mayo Clinic.

First Parish Congregational Church. Parish established in 1717. Abolitionist & author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, had a vision of the death of a slave while sitting in Pew 23 during a communion service. The vision became a pivotal element in her book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Her husband was a professor at Bowdoin College.
