The reality of having only one airport, I suppose. To be a proper big city, we need to get NewLeaf or whatever that startup airline is going to be called to operate out of St. Andrews Airport so we can then officially be big time.

"bruh hurry up I need to get to the airport in an hour bruh"

"which one bruh?"

"oh yah huh huh I meant WJARIA bruh"

Even with increased traffic it seems more likely that YWG would expand than flights being shifted to a second location.

That said, it is interesting that on the airport's official site while it confirms the name is Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, the site itself calls it "Winnipeg Richardson International Airport" still a long name but more manageable.

I don't think many people from Toronto say, "I've got to get to Lester B Pearson International airport", either.

They call it Pearson. We can call it Richardson.

That's also because there's two commercial airports in Toronto.

I noticed that too.

If there were two airports that people had to regularly attend, I would assume we'd have to start using Richardson and St. Andrews for example. But right now, airport is good.

I just meant that Richardson, if you want to use the name, is probably enough, just as Pearson is enough in Toronto.

Makes sense

Lived beside St Andrews for a spell. Who knows, maybe someday down the line we'll have the choice..

"I'm heading out to Andrews to catch a flight to Saskatoon..Andrews? You sure you're not heading out of Richardson?"

I know dream on, I'll drop you off at the Airport...

I defy anyone to use the airport's full name when saying it out loud to someone... it's practically unusable!

No disrespect to J.A. Richardson, but the airport should still be named Stevenson Field. It's in bad taste to name something after someone and then change it without any apparent good reason.
I don't get as to why Canada's airports are not named after local historical aviators instead. Regina's airport is named after Canada's first commercially-licenced pilot. (Roland J. Groome.)

Huh.

St. Andrews doesn't have the runway length to operate most commuter aircraft out of I'm afraid.

^ Could St Andrews extend the length of the runways in the future or are they pretty much limited to the boundaries of the property they are on? Their was a plan sometime back to expand the facility, don't know if it ever came to fruition or if it entailed lengthening the runways in the future or just upgrades to the the facility in general..

St. Andrews was built to channel general aviation traffic away from YWG and I think that will basically be its role for the foreseeable future. I don't seriously see it becoming a hub for scheduled service or anything like that.

At the Grey Cup Street Festival going on at the U of W, I saw a booth sponsored by Newleaf... they have a logo and colours now. There was a prize for a ski trip to Fernie, presumably on their airline? So at the very least we can say this company hasn't fallen apart yet.

Yes, it was built for this purpose, and does so at quite and astounding rate.
With YWG in the same top 20 list...Of course not in passenger traffic.

St. Andrews did expand in its heyday by adding an additional parallel runway shortly after I finished my flight training. Then the 80s happened, people stopped flight training and the new runway was shut down. Our club now uses it for autoslalom.

18% mortgage interest rates, high unemployment, recession. People started holding on to their wallets. Flight training is quite expensive.

Huh.
James A Richardson Airport here in Winnipeg is named after the founder of Canadian Airways which became the government owned and operated Trans Canada Airlines which is now Air Canada.

Might be nice to see a Max Ward airport as Wardair did a lot for opening up the north before becoming a southern based scheduled airline.
