Huntington, WV

Huntington is the 2nd largest city in West Virginia with a population around 50,000. It is located on the Ohio River, across from southern Ohio and near eastern Kentucky. The city peaked mid-century with a population of 86,000 and was the largest city in West Virginia at the time, slightly larger than the capitol of Charleston.

Nice shots! Did you see Pullman Square or the area near Ritter Park?

I don't think so. I came into town on Hwy 10 and then headed west towards Kenova on Hwy 60. The only neighborhoods I saw were the ones by the river. From Live Maps it looks like there are some nicer areas in the S/SW of town near the hills. Next time I'm in Huntington, I'm going to check out the neighborhoods more.

Great thread Thundertubs!! This was another city I intended to cover last year besides Frankfort before my change of plans. You covered Huntington nicely. Having said that, I forgot how much different Huntington is than Charleston. I have been by this town too many times to count on my way to Oak Hill and only once back in 2002 did I finally take a drive through downtown. I actually came a different way since I stopped in Portsmouth Ohio earlier that day. Sad to say, this city is in desparate need of some TLC. It was just as gritty back then as it is now. I had hoped that their fortunes would eventually reverse and that people would eventually move back in. (wishful thinking) Anyway, thanks for the great thread!! Hope you did Ashland KY. I stopped there back in 02 as well, and it's definately worth a thread!!

Nice pictures. Huntington looks a lot rougher and grimier than I thought it would be.

Awesome, harsh, devastating tour of "America's Fattest City" . This might win the award for "grimiest SSP tour of the year".

There's some really elegant neighborhoods on the hilltop

this building totally SUCKS!

T'anks!

Some nice stuff there, but, dreary and run down at the same time. Has a lot of potential though. Thanks!

Whoa tubs, I don't know if you were trying to make Huntington look gritty on purpose or not, but besides a couple nice buildings downtown this town is run down as hell. Yuck. Couldn't live there.

This house is sweet but it would be creepy to live in the direct shadow of a giant evil looking factory (behind it):

Actually, the industrial shots remind me a lot of Weirton.

Not on purpose, that's just kind of how it unfolded to me (I'm sure the weather didn't help either). There apparently are nicer parts of town, but I didn't stumble upon them. I parked near Marshall U, which was in a pretty grimy area. The whole metro area, through Ashland and Ironton (tour coming soon) had that classic Ohio Valley industrial feel.

Evergrey - was it America's fattest city? I though it was the "most unhealthy city" overall.

Rough looking, perhaps a little past its prime, but they still have some substantial buildings downtown

^Soon to be rehabilitated as part of the Old Main Corridor project, connecting downtown to the university. I can't wait to see this refreshened.

^The long neglected sixth floor is being restored finally. I went to the top (via one of the unlocked stairwells) and found original (and working) sinks and showers, original furniture from when it was all a hotel... the basement had some massive Turkish tubs, and those have been restored.

^Work is progressing on the interior, to restore the Keith Albee into a performing arts venue as it once was. The partitions are at least gone.

If you go back, you should check out more of the 9th Street plaza reconstruction (took away a pedestrian mall that had failed), Pullman Square, the neighborhoods by Ritter Park and the mansions on the hill behind that.

Great tour Tt. I love the WV cities. I toured them some years back, and had a fun trip (though the weather didn't always cooperate for me either ).

Thanks for the info Sherman, I was wondering about that building. Looks different than when I visited 6 years ago:

I was wondering about the Frederick, too. It must have been THE place at one time. Sure is great looking.

I hope they can get moving with that Keith Albee theater. It certainly looks like a worthwhile restoration. I'm sure money is a problem. Stimulus money! That would definitely stimulate Huntington.

Again, TT, as with Charleston, a very evocative tour here. I love your subjects.

I like that you and Evergrey did WV simultaneously. Great overview of an interesting place. It's full of surprises. And sometimes not.

So Great to see this small city. That commercial street is full of nice architecture. Thanks for posting these.
