starbucks does well in vancouver because it was one of the first cities the chain expanded into even before it expanded into other states and vancouver embraced the coffee thing before most places in canada did and is why vancouver in recent years has had a growing indie coffee scene, seems everyone and their dog is opening a roaster place these days.

people like familiarity and consistency and starbucks delivers on those and the free wifi is a big draw amongst people i know.
According to a PBS travel show Smart Travels, Starbucks started because the founders were tired of having to go to Vancouver for a great cup of coffee!!

I think the whole overpaying for fancy coffee is ridiculous period but it's part of our culture now and every Starbucks I've ever been in anywhere is pretty much full even when there are like 4 in a 1x1 square block area. Don't think it is because of lack of choice.
Yes, folks in the burbs do have a lack a choice. Also, fewer high density neighbourhoods doesn't help to attract smaller local chains to open up there (I'm also referring to Vancouver suburbs too). Blenz closing in Surrey is expected. The chain is similar if not worse than Starbucks, but trail in the gimmicks of marketing. I only like their tea but it is kinda steep (pun intended).

The high cost coffee argument is not valid because you pay lots for a cuppa at Starbucks too, so why are they doing so well in the suburbs like you said? Answer: Monopoly.

Rosie's on Robson has [finally] shut down.
Big signs on the windows say Original Joe's will be opening up.

I was wondering if it would relocate temporarily - i.e. to the former Figmint location?

1226 Robson Street

Does anyone know what restaurant is going into 1226 Robson Street? I'm super curious as the windows are now papered with "restaurantconstruction.ca" advertising.

Good idea, there's not much else in Cambie Village available at that size and to lose your presence for years could kill the location. I wonder if that carper store at King Ed & Cambie finally had their last Closing Out sale. It would be a perfect spot given that it was a White Spot for years before being demolsihed in the early Eighties. That office building is still the HQ for Shato Holdings which owns White Spot.

If that King Ed & Cambie space has never been a restaurant (in the present building), the fit-out would probably be prohibitive.
WRT the Figmint space, I'm assuming that there's still a kitchen in there.

RIP, hangover-killer.

I can't count how many times I'd go to that location on a Sunday morning (or order delivery!) to kill the hangover brought on from the night before. Oh, and a stop at Black Dog Video on the way home.

Noticed a new Japanese restaurant in the former Japanese restaurant space at Vancouver House (next to the Blenz on Seymour St.).

It's called "Ryoo Izakaya".

New Cafe Artigiano Opening

Was walking to work this morning and noticed a signage up for a new Cafe Artigiano opening Summer 2015 at the Teresen Gas tower at Georgia and Thurlow.(I don't know how to insert pics here yet...otherwise I would have posted it)

With Trump coming on line, that stretch of Georgia could become prime retail...

They, and the BC Gas building (or whatever it's called now), are certainly hoping so.

Although shangri la kinda killed that stretch with that huge blank wall. It would be nice to see hsbc building at the end get rid of that useless plaza and turn it I to something nice.

Tratorria is now open in The Sovereign in Metrotown.
I walked by and found out that it opened 2 days ago.
Looks nice, on the expensive side but I'll certainly go to check it out.
Going to be great to have a place to get a drink near my house after work finally.

Has anyone been to either of the existing locations?
