We could learn a thing or two from the Aussies:

Sydney plans $3-million fireworks blowout

Canwest News ServiceDecember 31, 2008

Sydney will defy predictions of a gloomy 2009 with its biggest-ever New Year party and midnight fireworks display on Wednesday, watched by an expected 1.5 million revellers. The theme for the celebrations will be 'Creation' and the centrepiece a pyrotechnic storm over Australia's biggest city, with firework simulations of lightning, thunder and rain, all linked to Aborigine creation myths. About 120,000 fireworks will be exploded in the $3.45-million display.

I'm not so sure about your statement. The Grizzlies yeah, they were no loss to this city. But the Canucks? They would be sorely missed.

Who cares if people in Halifax or anywhere else complains. Do you know how much money gets thrown at Quebec for the exact same reason? We complain, but not enough to do anything about it.

i don't really care

and i don't really care if the fireworks die or not - never go to them anyway

if not them than the east side protesters will complain

its what happens here - i'm just saying expect an outcry

Honestyl, does anyone here understand just how much money it brings into the local communities? The most idiotic thing Vancouver council can do is let this event die. In fact many businesses, such as boat rentals and mini cruises, rely on this event similar to how many retailers rely on Christmas. Honestly, it is as if no one cares to look at the larger picture. Maybe the GVRD should pay for it (if that is at all possible).

If this event dies without a hard fight and if the mass feeling in vancouver is that they are glad this event is gone, then this city really is becoming a lost cause.

From having read the CBC website in the past, I think it's safe to say those people hate EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING.

No kidding.
Everytime you read any story with any contreversial element (Politics, Economy, climate change, etc), its like theres a horde of HATE mongers that are on there. I almost wonder if theres some little group of bitter, angry people that do nothing but read CBC stories and flame them.

I was down at Granville Island today and i had to take a picture of this

I am sure these people are really happy about the cancelation! Honestly, for me the fireworks and the PNE/Playland did tip the scale for Vancouver to still be in the fun category, but now, really? I was at QEP earlier today as well and i was talking to several tourists from Ontario about the idea of a lookout structure. Immediately they all thought it was a great idea, then i told them how it was proposed and cancelled by the local community. they could not believe it.

Also you think that the fireworks the year before the Olympics would be a good promo time for the city... oh well, what can we do!

Yes this decision was made by city council to make Vancouver a no fun city and not by a lack of sponsorship money.
Maybe those people in the facebook group that will really miss the fireworks can each chip in $10 each as well as all the businesses that will lose hundreds or thousands of dollars have them chip in some money. It's funny how quickly they complain about the loss of the event but they didn't offer to help pay for it.
I'll miss the fireworks, but I'm not about to step up to pay for them myself. Maybe they could raise the hotel tax an extra $1/night which should cover this.
